Talbot Embedded Changes Lives
Meet Luis. Luis is a youth pastor at his home church in San Diego, where he grew up since he was a child. He shows me a picture of him as a toddler at the site where the church broke ground some decades ago. Luis went to Bible college and has been serving in the youth ministry at his church but sensed a call to further his education. However, his wife was in the midst of her doctoral program at the time, so he decided the timing was not quite fitting.

However, our recent article, published open access in the Journal of Management Studies, reveals the hidden paradox of accumulating star inventors. While elite talent drives massive breakthroughs, packing your R&D lab with stars can actively bottleneck incremental innovation.
Frankly in Love Book Review
age 14+ Heartfelt coming-of-age tale about love, family, identity. Parents need to know that David Yoon's Frankly in Love is a heartfelt coming-of-age novel that thoughtfully explores first love, complex family relationships, identity, and racism. Korean characters pretend to date each other so their parents won't find out that they're actually dating outside their ethnicity. A character gets shot, and the book also deals with the death of a loved one.

David Yoon on How He Learned to Spend Money on Love
This essay is part of a Modern Love project on the intersection of money and relationships. I didn’t grow up in a romantic household. My parents were more business partners than lovers, consumed with the day-to-day operation of our family bodega. They never touched affectionately, never said, “I love you.” Dad didn’t call Mom “honey.” Rather, he called her “Hani-umma,” or “Han’s mommy,” using my Korean name. Mom addressed him likewise with my older brother’s.
What to expect in Rhode Island’s special congressional election Tuesday
Democrat Gabe Amo and Republican Gerry Leonard face off in a special congressional election in Rhode Island on Tuesday to complete the term of former Democratic U.S. Rep. David Cicilline, who resigned in May after seven terms. Also on the ballot is a special election for state Senate. Amo, a former Obama and Biden White House aide, won a crowded Democratic primary in September, defeating a field that included state Sen. Sandra Cano, Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos and former state Rep. Aaron Regunberg.
I watched Bullet Train and Spiderhead after having read the books
Hi everyone! Hope you’re gently settling into 2023. I’m back to writing in my big fuzzy ball chair, and also celebrating the recent launch of Joy Revolution’s first book, Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute, which hit the indie bestseller list right out of the gate. Hooray! As promised, here’s my thoughts on two book-to-film adaptations. The Bullet Train adaptation is about interpolating a story. The Spiderhead adaptation is about wrapping an aesthetic around a story’s concept, ie. Marvelization.
What I learned in 2022
Happy new year everyone! Warm wishes and lots of love to everyone. You’re the best dang readers a writer like me could hope for. Friends and family are basically everything. You need money to live, but friends and family are what you live for. Creativity is what makes us most human. People holed up in those Lascaux caves 20,000 years ago still managed to find time to make its now-famous wall art. You’re creative by nature, even if you’re one of those people who weirdly insists that they aren’t.
Happy Holidays from Dave!
Hope your 2022 has been great. Here’s to an even better 2023. It’s been a busy year, hence the general lack of updates from me. Nicki and I are working on a book together. We’ve also been preparing the launch of our first books for Joy Revolution (our publishing imprint dedicated to love stories starring people of color): Talia Hibbert’s hilarious YA debut Highly Suspicious & Unfairly Cute in January and the amazing Queen Bee regency revenge story by Amalie Howard in April.

The Florentine Gold Florin: How Much Is That in Dollars?
By David Yoon for American Numismatic Society (ANS) …… Something we are asked from time to time is how much a past coin was worth in terms of present-day money. It can be hard enough sometimes to say what the coin was worth at the time it was in circulation. Equating it to present-day money brings in some additional difficulties. Let’s consider one of the most important trade coins of the late Middle Ages, the Florentine gold florin.
CITY OF ORANGE by David Yoon Read by Intae Kim
by David Yoon | Read by Intae Kim Fiction 11.25 hrs. Unabridged © 2022 What do you do when you're the only one left? With a slow, deliberate cadence, Intae Kim shares the first-person perspective of a man who has no clear memory of what turned his home state of California into a hot, dry wasteland. Kim's tone is appropriately exhausted but takes on an appealing lilt during the surprising moments of wry humor that are peppered throughout this atmospheric narrative.
David Yoon on How to Cultivate Creative Endurance
Books take forever to make. From the moment I start a manuscript, I know I’m in for a long haul, all by myself. I do sometimes brainstorm with others, but for the most part it’s just me, alone in a room, putting words down one by one. For days. Months. Years! So how do I keep going when the only one watching over me is… me? The answer isn’t a divine gift of artistic passion. It’s not a perfect knowledge of which words to put where, or some genetic predisposition to stick-to-itiveness.
The 10 Most Captivating Apocalypse Novels
I’m an apocalypse junkie. Not because I love seeing the world all jacked up (except, okay, I do) but because of how powerful and versatile the apocalypse is as a narrative device. Apocalypses can be fun! They’re a chance to sweep away all the annoying quotidian bullshit and live life pared down to just your favorite tools and your wits, a camping trip that never ends. Or they can be a handy crucible, a way to boil off everything until only the hardiest emotional truths remain.

CITY OF ORANGE | Kirkus Reviews
by David Yoon ‧ A man wakes up alone near an abandoned housing development with no memory of who he is or how he got there. It’s 2010 in California, and the nameless narrator wakes up in a dried-out riverbed under a concrete bridge. He has a searing headache, the knowledge that he’s living in a post-apocalyptic world, and a bottle of painkillers, but nothing else. He can’t even remember his own name.

Review: A mesmerizing meditation on postapocalyptic California and one man's quest for answers
For those who pay attention to emerging talent, David Yoon’s arrival has been nothing short of explosive. His 2019 debut, “Frankly in Love,” is already listed among the best young adult novels of all time. His first novel for adults, “Version Zero,” was one of the most anticipated crime novels of 2021. His second, “City of Orange,” is a tale of survival in postapocalyptic California.
The Coins That Aren't There
By David Yoon for American Numismatic Society (ANS) …… It has long been said that the absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. This is an essential principle in archaeology, where the formation of evidence is usually very complex and poorly understood. Various alternative possible explanations are always conceivable for the patterns observed. Nevertheless, when enough evidence is accumulated, the absences and deficiencies become more informative.
How I write a book, part 2
It’s good to see you! Before we begin, a little reminder that my next adult book, City of Orange, is coming out May 24. (It’s a different kind of post-apocalyptic story.) Islamic and Medieval Coins: New Years and Old Years
By David Yoon for American Numismatic Society (ANS) …… This essay is being written on December 31, 2021, to be posted on January 4, 2022. It seems like a suitable moment to think about calendars and years and how people define them. The presence of year dates on coins is tremendously useful to the numismatist – probably more useful than the dates generally were to the governments that decided to put them on the coins, usually for administrative control.

How I write a book, part 1
Happy new year everybody! Here’s how I write a book. Macbook Pro Pages app Reminders app Apple Watch Every book I write starts with a what if. Sometimes, the what if doesn’t wind up having much to do with the final story. It just has to feel personal and meaningful. For Frankly In Love, it was: What if I could love and accept my parents the way they were without asking them to change?
Early Modern World Coins: The Ottoman Kuruş and the Control of Money
By Ellen Nye and David Yoon for American Numismatic Society (ANS) …… In August 2018, as the country of Turkey faced a currency crisis, its president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called for people to convert their dollars or euros into Turkish lira. The Turkish lira had dropped by almost 50% against the dollar in the previous 12 months, and many Turkish people were converting their savings to dollars or euros, fearing further losses.
How Do Numismatists Decide Where a Coin Is From?
By David Yoon for American Numismatic Society (ANS) …… There are many ways to describe where a coin is from. One by reference to the place of minting (e.g., Kese). If this is known, it offers a specific, relatively unambiguous location that allows a dot to be placed on a map without too much thought. This option is often favored in ancient numismatics. Another way is to refer to the political entity by whose authority the coin was produced (e.g., the French Territory of Afars and Issas).
Ancient and Medieval Coins With Two-Sided Legends
By David Yoon for American Numismatic Society (ANS) …… Many–probably most–coins do not have any inherent directionality in the images or legends on their two sides. There may be some difference in the perceived importance or generality of their information, but each side may convey its information independently of the other. Thus, arbitrary conventions exist for defining obverse and reverse, so that numismatists can decide which side gets described first.
How to watch yourself on TV
For about an eight month period, I took a photo of every Asian man I saw on television. I did this because I was curious as to how often I got to see a person who looked like me on the screen. I watched TV (shows, movies, and video games). Every time I saw an obviously Asian man, I paused and took a photo. Any Asian man would do. It didn’t matter if they were a lead, supporting actor, or an extra in the background.

On Accountability, Artistry, and The Hard Work of Becoming Better People
There’s no such thing as a moral squirrel. They’re too focused on gathering nuts for winter to worry about stuff like that. Humans, on the other hand, are obsessed with morality. With right vs. wrong. Right: Are people kind and generous to one another? Wrong: Are people only out for themselves, no different from squirrels? Virtually all heroes in stories—I’m talking mainstream, commercial entertainment here—are angels.

Medieval World Coins: The Allan Evans Papers
By David Yoon for American Numismatic Society (ANS) …… The many treasures of the American Numismatic Society’s (ANS) archives include not only the Society’s own history and papers documenting the activities of many of its former staff and officers. There are also resources for researchers, many of which document the activities of numismatic collectors or dealers, but some of which are of scholarly interest.

Got an idea for a cool app? How big tech can turn it into a data-mining scheme
I used to work in tech as a user experience (UX) expert. I was a professional nerd. Nerds in our industry like to begin their sentences with “Wouldn’t it be cool ...,” as in “Wouldn’t it be cool if we could share photos with our friends from anywhere?” or “Wouldn’t it be cool if we could customize news to our tastes?” or “Wouldn’t it be cool if we could wear virtual makeup?” I’ve worked for firms involved with social media, cybersecurity and ad tech.

Summary and Reviews of Super Fake Love Song by David Yoon
Excerpt Super Fake Love Song Gray's door was always open, because that's how Gray liked things. The door to my room was always shut, because that's how I liked things. My door was blank and unadorned. My door could have led to anything—a linen closet, a brick wall, an alternate universe. You only get one chance to make a first impression, Mom liked to say. It was characteristically shallow advice, but there was a truth to it that I only now realized.
How to Write Sparky Dialogue
When we read great dialogue, sparks fly. Why? I love dialogue. When I’m reading a book and I spot dialogue up ahead, I think: Sweet—we’re getting to the good stuff soon. And when I’m writing a book and I get to a part requiring dialogue, I think: Sweet—time to have some real fun. Here’s the reason the simple act of watching one human talk to another can cause our brains to spark: because of the spike in electrical neural activity.
