Lee County school board passes $3.05 billion budget for fiscal 2027 by a 6-1 vote

A reserve fund transfer and non-renewals figured prominently in the 2027 $3.05 billion Lee County school system budget. To get to that number due to declining enrollment and the drying up of COVID and hurricane special funds, the board had to transfer about 45 million dollars from the system’s reserve fund balance. It also meant the non-renewals of 457 staff positions, including 275 teachers.

Upon Gloria Steinem’s death last week, National Organization for Women national president Kim Villanueva called her outspoken, courageous, brilliant and tenacious, a feminist warrior whose voice helped transform the women’s rights movement. The journalist-turned-activist was like the godmother of the women’s movement, said Lee County NOW president Nancy Terreri. "This was an amazing person who had such a big impact on all of our lives, whether you were a follower of hers or not," Terreri said.

Florida Board of Governors bars undocumented students from state's public universities

Florida public universities will no longer admit undocumented students.The Florida Board of Governors passed the measure at its meeting Thursday at Florida Gulf Coast University. By unanimous vote and with no discussion, the board of governors approved an amendment to its admissions rule. Doors are shut to students without lawful status as of the 2027-2028 academic year. Among eight speakers giving comment before the vote was FGCU graduate student Connor Plonka.
