‘The Whale’ Review: Body Issues
Charlie is a college writing instructor who never leaves his apartment. He conducts his classes online, disabling his laptop camera so the students can’t see him. The movie camera, guided by Darren Aronofsky and his go-to cinematographer, Matthew Libatique, also stays indoors most of the time. Occasionally you get an exterior view of the drab low-rise building where Charlie lives, or a breath of fresh air on the landing outside his front door.
Emhoff Emerges as Face of White House Fight Against Antisemitism
WASHINGTON — Sitting alongside leaders of the Jewish community on Wednesday, Doug Emhoff, the husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, described the rising tide of antisemitism in the United States as an “epidemic of hate.” Mr. Emhoff, the first Jewish spouse of a vice president or president, has in recent weeks become one of the federal government’s more forceful voices against violence and hate speech directed at Jews.
Border Patrol Agent Found Guilty of Killing Four Women
SAN ANTONIO — A jury in San Antonio convicted a former Border Patrol agent on Wednesday in the shooting deaths of four women he had encountered in the city of Laredo. The jury returned its verdict after five hours of deliberations, finding Juan David Ortiz, 39, a former supervisory intelligence officer with the U.S. Border Patrol, guilty of capital murder after a nearly two-week trial. Mr. Ortiz faces life in prison.
Weed Connoisseurs Celebrate Local Craft Growers
Good morning. It’s Thursday. We’ll look at competitive marijuana growing and how it figures into the new retail marijuana industry in New York. We’ll also see why an accuser says the state attorney general, Letitia James, protected a top aide from fallout over sexual harassment allegations. In horse racing, there’s the Breeders Cup. In women’s tennis, there’s the Billie Jean King Cup. In yachting, there’s the America’s Cup. In marijuana growing, there’s the New York Growers Cup.
Pentagon Divides Big Cloud-Computing Deal Among 4 Firms

From the DealBook Summit: Leaders Look Into the Future
For last week’s DealBook conference in New York City, The New York Times invited leaders in an array of disciplines to gather together to talk about some of the most pressing challenges they see as they look to the future in their areas of expertise. We asked them similar questions in advance. Their answers, which have been edited and condensed, are included here. How to Think Freely What is the greatest obstacle to thinking freely, and how can you overcome it? Nita Farahany: Robinson O.
Wait! Wait! Georgia’s Over?
As the sun sinks over Georgia, we bid adieu to the Senate runoff election that seems to have been contested since the beginning of time. Yes, dinosaurs once ruled the earth and Senate candidate Herschel Walker probably has a theory about how they could be killed by a werewolf. Or maybe a vampire. This certainly was a race to remember.
Cyberattack Takes Down the Met Opera’s Website and Box Office
The Metropolitan Opera has been the victim of a cyberattack that has kept its website and box office out of commission for more than 30 hours, the company’s general manager said on Wednesday. The cyberattack has completely incapacitated the opera company’s ticketing system, which typically handles about $200,000 in sales each day at this time of year, said the general manager, Peter Gelb.
In India, Fiercely Loyal Soccer Fans (of Brazil and Argentina)
Like a phoenix, the 30-foot-tall foam-board cutout of the soccer star Lionel Messi rises from a river running through lush green hills in the southern Indian state of Kerala, a towering symbol of a World Cup mania that knows no boundaries. The man behind the tribute, Nousheer Nellikode, 35, is a die-hard fan of Argentina’s national team, which Messi captains. One of his brothers has similarly strong feelings about Brazil, another leading contender to win the Cup.
Out of the Public Eye, a Debate Is Raging Over a Postwar Ukraine Economy
With Russian missiles pounding apartment buildings, power plants, schools and roads, a glimmering vision of a reconstructed postwar Ukraine seems impossibly far off. But an urgent battle of ideas has already begun over how to manage what would be the most extensive rebuilding project in Europe since the end of World War II.
‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio’ Review: Puppets and Power
“Shoot the puppet!” By the time a Fascist hard-liner barks this death threat in “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” a stop-motion animated version of the children’s classic, you might be wondering if its impish little marionette is going to escape in one piece. At that point, Pinocchio has been threatened by scoundrels, run over by a car, lost body parts to fire and targeted by none other than Benito Mussolini.
Peru’s President Tried to Dissolve Congress. By Day’s End, He Was Arrested.
LIMA, Peru — It was a day on which much of Peru was focused on Congress, where an impeachment vote was planned against the president on corruption charges. But shortly before noon, the Peruvian leader addressed the country in a surprise televised address.
A Gray Area of Loyalties Splinters a Liberated Ukrainian Town
SVIATOHIRSK, Ukraine — When Myroslava, a 36-year-old construction manager, returned to her hometown of Sviatohirsk in eastern Ukraine last month, she expected to find her house destroyed by shelling. Her house was indeed heavily damaged, but she discovered something else even more disturbing: Her neighbors, who had stayed behind during the Russian occupation, had stolen furniture, insulation and roof tiles from her home and a property she oversaw in town.

Donald Trump and His Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad 3 Weeks
Donald J. Trump’s unusually early announcement of a third presidential campaign was aimed in part at clearing the Republican field for 2024, but his first three weeks as a candidate have undercut that goal, highlighting his vulnerabilities and giving considerable ammunition to those in the G.O.P. arguing to turn the page on him.
Peru’s president ousted by Congress in political crisis
LIMA, Peru â The president of Peru was ousted by Congress and arrested on a charge of rebellion Wednesday after he sought to dissolve the legislative body and take unilateral control of the government, triggering a grave constitutional crisis. Vice President Dina Boluarte replaced Pedro Castillo and became the first female leader in the history of the republic after hours of wrangling between the legislature and the departing president, who had tried to prevent an impeachment vote.
FTX Founder Sam Bankman-Fried Is Said to Face Market Manipulation Inquiry

New York Times Union Starts One-Day Strike
Reporters and editors at The New York Times began a one-day strike on Thursday, saying talks between their union and the company had dragged on and showed limited progress. The contract between The Times and The New York Times Guild expired in March 2021, and about 40 bargaining sessions have been held since. Negotiators have failed to come to an agreement on salaries, health and retirement benefits, and other issues. More than 1,100 employees signed a pledge to strike for 24 hours.
Britain Is Miserable, but Britons Are Fighting Back
LONDON — Britain is languishing, and the signs are everywhere. Inflation is in double digits, and the recession — the worst of all Group of 7 countries — is expected to last deep into 2024. The National Health Service is on life support, public transport is sputtering, and post-Brexit worker shortages are widespread. Homeowners face soaring mortgage rates, renters are subject to no-fault evictions, and millions can’t afford to heat their homes.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition Level Scaling Guide - Legendary or Classic Mode
One of the first decisions you make when starting up the new Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is your basic settings. You may remember some of these. You’ll need to decide how difficult you want combat to be, whether you and your companions auto-level up, how your squad uses their abilities. There’s also a new option here though: Level Scaling. In this guide, we’ll explain what these two different options do and recommend one for you to pick.
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition Galactic Readiness Guide
The original Mass Effect 3 release has a feature called Galaxy at War. Throughout the course of the game you have to prepare the universe’s efforts against the reaper threat. The campaign alone frequently isn’t enough to make sure Shepard is prepared for the final battles. A lot of your Galactic Readiness score comes from your multiplayer efforts and as a result, many grind it out before finishing the campaign. Failing to keep the score high enough results in the best ending being locked out.
Making Up for Lost Time With Photo Mode in Mass Effect: Legendary Edition
I have what’s probably an unhealthy relationship with my player characters in RPGs. I spend collective hours in character creators customizing my protagonists, and these people become the face of their respective games for me. Odds are, if you’ve ever read something I’ve written on this site about games like Cyberpunk 2077, Pokemon Sword & Shield, or Bioware games, the images used in them feature my version of the main character. I’m just that particular about these things.
Your Old Face Code May Not Work Perfectly in Mass Effect: Legendary Edition
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is a chance for a whole new generation of players to experience Bioware’s science fiction trilogy, but it’s also an opportunity for old fans to re-experience them on modern consoles. That means some might be looking to bring their version of Commander Shepard into the collection, and that means using face codes from the original trilogy.
A Mass Effect Legendary Edition Toggle Lets You Put Back the Original Mako Controls
There’s a lot of controversial choices in the Mass Effect series: What happened with Wrex in the first game? Did you free the Rachni Queen? Do you really want Thane or just saying you do? But I never figured that the Mako would be one of those controversial decisions. You see, the Mako — Mass Effect 1’s big dumb tank that controlled like a sauced-up spaghetti plate on wheels — was not everyone’s favorite part of the game.
Legendary Edition Will Run on Different Consoles
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is bringing a substantial visual update to Bioware’s science fiction trilogy, and that also raises questions of how the games will perform on modern hardware. EA and Bioware have released a breakdown of resolution and framerate updates, and it looks like the remasters will have two performance options on console: favor framerate and favor quality.
This Mass Effect: Legendary Edition Box Art Creator is Fucking Rad
As we’ve talked about before on the site, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition’s box art is effective because it doesn’t present protagonist Commander Shepard as a default, but instead lets you envision that your version of the character exists behind their iconic helmet. Well, Bioware’s released a tool for you to personalize it even further, and I’m obsessed with it.
Mass Effect Cast and Developers to Reunite in Legendary Edition Stream
The Mass Effect: Legendary Edition remasters are ten days away from launch as of this writing, and several members of the series’ voice cast and the original development team are getting together for another celebratory stream. Last time this happened was an incredibly emotional reunion where the cast spoke pretty profoundly about the series’ impact. So hopefully this will be just as affecting for long-time fans.
I'm Convinced My Mass Effect Legendary Cache Has Been Sucked into a Wormhole
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is just about two weeks away as of this writing, with the remasters of Bioware’s science fiction trilogy headed to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on May 14. But the chance to play these games again (or for the first time) all dolled up and pretty isn’t the only thing I’m counting down the days to. I’m also waiting for my Legendary Cache, a pseudo special edition that doesn’t actually include the game, to show up any day now.
There's a Strong Chance I've Bought this Garrus Vakarian Statue By Day's End
In about three months, I’m expecting a big N7 helmet to come with my Mass Effect: Legendary Edition collector’s package (that doesn’t include the remastered trilogy with the steelbook case), which will take up most of the shelf space I have left in my home. But, I can’t lie. I’ve been eyeing this new statue of Mass Effect party member Garrus Vakarian that Bioware is selling at its online store.
March 17 DVD roundup
With entertainment options beginning to dwindle and “social distancing” in effect, it’s a good time to start stocking up on movies. But if you can’t get the physical media because the stores are closed, be sure to check your favorite streaming services. This week includes offerings from directors Terrence Malick (A Hidden Life) and Clint Eastwood (Richard Jewell). Family fare is available in the next installment of the “Jumanji” series.
