Jordan Downey has made a career in crafting films with incredible practical effects. From the campy Thankskilling to the dour Head Hunter to the disgustingly delightful segment in V/H/S/Beyond, Downey has proved time and time again that he knows how to craft gnarly creatures and nauseating kills through primarily practical means. And his latest film, The Cycle, which had its world premiere at the 2026 edition of Fantastic Fest, is his best work so far, both visually and narratively.

That giant man lurking in the sewer in Resident Evil? A giant fucking puppet. Director Zach Cregger revealed in an interview with Collider that the creature, prominently featured in the trailer with something moving inside its stomach, was a massive practical creation requiring multiple puppeteers. “That’s a giant 2,000-pound puppet, took four people to operate that guy,” Cregger explained. And while the scene combines practical and digital effects, the creature itself was physically there.
