Lawrence opening historic courthouse to public
MOULTON — Townspeople, yeoman farmers and mule-drawn wagons arrived early to the courthouse square in the summer of 1937. Some came to tour the new Classical Revival-style courthouse, which did not yet have electricity. Others reported for possible jury duty in the trial of a man accused of killing a deputy sheriff in a church shooting. “Some came for both,” Lawrence County Archivist Wendy Hazel said.
Rare sports items returned to Lawrence County
Two rare pieces of sports memorabilia are back home and will soon be on display in the Lawrence County Archives. “I have no idea how an item like this got to Texas, or even who had it for sale one day in the Houston area,” John Greer of Wimberley, Texas, wrote in an email to Lawrence County Archivist Wendy Hazle. The items are an original picture of the first Lawrence County High football team from 1915 and a period-era leather helmet with no facemask.

History and Mardi Gras: Jacksons are Lawrence County's volunteering couple
MOULTON — If there’s something involving volunteers happening in Moulton, chances are Marvin and Elayne Jackson are involved — a fact that will become clear Friday at Moulton's Mardi Gras parade. They met in 1999, married four years later, opened a restaurant in Moulton's historic Black community and founded the Byler Road Project, which has awarded almost $50,000 in scholarship money to 42 students across Lawrence County.

A family legacy: Jimmie is fourth-generation Montgomery to attend Iron Bowl
MOULTON — When Jimmie Montgomery arrives at Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday, he’ll continue a family legacy that covers four generations. Since 1948, at least one member of the Montgomery family has attended 76 of the last 77 Iron Bowls that Alabama and Auburn have played. Jimmie, a 13-year-old eighth grade student at Lawrence County High and self-described football junkie, already understands the importance of the Iron Bowl.
‘A good problem’ - Jolly family has cheerleaders at different schools in football playoffs
MOULTON — Ellie Jolly answered the question firmly and without hesitation. “West Morgan,” the 9-year-old said when asked if she preferred to attend an opening-round playoff game in Trinity or Madison where Hatton plays Madison Academy Friday night. Then, she changed her mind twice. “Well, maybe Hatton or both of them,” she said. Ellie was answering the same question parents Ryan and Heather Jolly have been asked many times since the 4A pairings were announced.
LCHS, East Lawrence made state history a decade ago
MOULTON – Jakob Terry remembers what assistant coach Royal Carpenter said as his cramping, exhausted body laid on the playing surface of Lawrence County High’s football stadium on Aug. 28, 2015. In a desperate and frustrating tone, the legendary coach said: “If you want this, you have to go take it.” Terry slid his feet back into his cleats, got a student manager to help him put his water-soaked shoulder pads and uniform back on and ran into history.

MOULTON — When Willow Dobbins arrived home last week from Children’s of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham, the first thing she did was grab her bat, glove and T-ball stand. She wanted to prove to the world — and perhaps herself — that she could still play softball. “She’s told us that nothing will hold her down and that she would continue to play sports,” her father Travis Dobbins said.
Gray, former Rough Rider and pro baseball player, dies at 88
If not for teammates, the world may have never known about Leo Gray’s athletic career. “Daddy was real competitive and perfected his skills no matter what he was doing,” daughter and Decatur City School Board President Michelle Gray King said. “But, he never said anything about being the greatest.” Gray, who played professional baseball in the Negro Leagues and semi-professional football for the Decatur Rough Riders, died Wednesday at his home following an extended illness. He was 88.

Hatton's Henley says prep coaches work hard because they love their roles
HATTON — On a white board in his balcony office above the gymnasium floor at Hatton High, Justin Henley had his schedule outlined for the last week of January. There were games on Monday and Tuesday, practices three other days and a game on Friday. “You don’t get to spend a lot of time with your family this time of year,” Henley said with a chuckle.
Moulton native plays important role at Bryant-Denny Stadium on game day
TUSCALOOSA — There will be plenty of chants of “Roll Tide” and “War Eagle” in Tuscaloosa on Saturday as Alabama and Auburn fans arrive for the annual Iron Bowl. Greg McKelvey has heard the chants for more than 50 years, and has even said a few himself. But when he arrives at Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium for the 89th meeting between Alabama and Auburn, his focus will not be on chants, and not necessarily on who wins the game.
Lawrence County’s McGregory runs into the record books
MOULTON – Ryder McGregory answered quickly and smiled just as fast. “My dad,” he said about the source of his athletic ability. Your speed? “From him, too,” the senior said of its origins. McGregory, a player some teammates describe as the hardest worker on the field, has used both his work ethic and natural ability to run his name into the Lawrence County High football record books.

Padgett wins 5K run at Alexander Park

Alexander Park recalling an all-star game Moulton played against Hartselle. LouAllen was the coach of the 12U team and Daniel was catching. “I called timeout and told him we needed to walk the batter,” Daniel said.
10-year-old hits homerun over fence at H.A. Alexander Park
The conditions were idea, the pitch down the middle and the swing near perfect. Ping! – and just like that Taitam King had what he hopes will be the first of many homeruns. In his first at bat as a youth baseball player, the 10-year-old Moulton Middle School student nailed an over-the-fence homerun that traveled about 230 feet and rolled into the parking lot at H.A. Alexander Park. “I was like ‘wow,’” assistant coach Bart Hollis said.

Moulton's lure for Bowermans: Family, small-town atmosphere
MOULTON — Opportunities to leave Lawrence County for better-paying jobs have been plentiful for Ryan and Kelli Bowerman. The high school sweethearts and educators, however, have made Moulton home “because this is where family is,” specifically the grandparents of their three children, Ryan said. “We’ve always said when we had kids, our No. 1 job would be to do what is best for them,” he said.

MOULTON — Because of her devotion to Alabama football, Beth LouAllen for two years refused to date the man she now calls her best friend and the love of her life. “He loves that old team that wears orange and blue, and it would have been like dating outside your religion,” she chuckled. Shaun LouAllen, now her husband, took her comments in stride “as I have for many years.” Then he looked at their daughter, Crimson LouAllen, and said: “Get her to tell you about the Kick Six.” Beth frowned.
