George Floyd’s murder on May 25, 2020, brought Jeanelle Austin back to Minneapolis. When Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, Austin, an activist with a background in theology, was living in Texas. When family members in Minneapolis reached out to her asking for resources to deal with the aftermath of Floyd’s death, she came home, packing only one week’s worth of clothes.
