Ethylene promotes SMAX1 accumulation to inhibit arbuscular mycorrhiza symbiosis - Nature Communications

Abstract Most land plants engage in arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) symbiosis with Glomeromycotina fungi for better access to mineral nutrients. The plant hormone ethylene suppresses AM development, but a molecular explanation for this phenomenon is lacking. Here we show that ethylene inhibits the expression of many genes required for AM formation in Lotus japonicus.

Plants constantly face the challenge of obtaining adequate nutrients from the soil, with phosphorus (P) being one of the most essential yet frequently limited nutrients. Plants absorb phosphorus in the form of inorganic orthophosphate (Chiou & Lin, 2011). Under phosphate-limiting conditions, a phosphate starvation response (PSR) is activated in the plants, initiated by derepression of transcriptional regulators known as PHOSPHATE STARVATION RESPONSE (PHR).
