'Saints and Liars': A look at those who offered aid to persecuted Jews in WWII - review
In her book 'Saints and Liars,' Deborah Dwork presents micro-histories of activities in Prague, Vilna, Shanghai, Marseilles, and Lisbon. During World War II, US-based agencies – the Unitarian Service Committee, the American Friends Service Committee, and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee – tried to provide relief, rescue, resettlement, and refugee aid to anti-fascists, Jews, and other individuals and groups targeted by the Nazis.
Saints and Liars: The Story of Americans Who Saved Refugees from the Nazis
As the stain of Nazi Germany’s oppression spread across Europe in the 1930s, news of that regime’s many crimes echoed widely. Adolf Hitler’s minions established their first concentration camps in 1933 for German political opponents. The camp system proliferated, extending to include other disfavored groups, notably Jews, Communists, gypsies, homosexuals, and the disabled. Bloodless conquests of Austria and Czechoslovakia brought further expansion of the oppression machine.
Saints and Liars: The Story of Americans Who Saved Refugees from the Nazis
Three different groups of people, three sets of motivations, and three methods of operation, but one goal: to save as many people displaced by World War II as possible. That is the premise of Saints and Liars, which tells the story of several American aid workers who performed heroic deeds to protect refugee communities in foreign countries and bring people to safety. This slim yet emotional book focuses on such efforts in five cities: Marseille, Lisbon, Prague, Vilna, and Shanghai.

101 books about where—and how—we live
Perhaps more than at any other time in American history, where we live determines much about what we know. As people who write about cities, we realized this presented a remarkable opportunity. We wanted to find stories about where people live that could change the way we think about the world.
