For some New Yorkers, it’s been more than three decades since they’ve had to take out their own trash or schlep down to the lobby for a delivery. But in advance of the possible doorman and porters strike scheduled to start Monday at midnight, folks all over town are reviewing building-management contingency plans warning of everything from extra chores to bans on moves. Some just cover the basics.

The prediction-market platform Polymarket recently asked users to guess where New York City’s median home value would fall on March 1. The rules were as follows: “This market will resolve according to the median home value for all property types in New York City, New York on March 1, 2026. If the reported value falls exactly between two brackets, then this market will resolve to the higher range bracket.” Users with names like Outgoing-Canoe and BR43 silently placed their bets.

“There goes our quiet neighborhood,” says a man who lives in my building as we enter our lobby on East End Avenue. A newly installed gated security barrier sits outside in the nearby intersection; the flashing police and ambulance lights of vehicles lining the block create a chaotic scene. Before heading up to my apartment, I stop to pick up a package at our front desk. “They’re saying it’s a suspicious device or something,” my doorman says, shrugging.

A federal jury has found disgraced luxury real-estate brokers Oren and Tal Alexander, along with their brother Alon Alexander, guilty on sex-trafficking charges. It was a total sweep for the prosecution: After three days of deliberation, the jury found the brothers guilty of each of the ten counts on which they had been indicted.

Kate Whiteman, the woman who accused Oren and Alon Alexander of rape in a lawsuit in March 2024 and initiated a wave of similar allegations from other women, has died, according to the New York Times. Whiteman, an Australia native, was reportedly found dead in Australia late last year. She was 45 years old. The coroner in New South Wales didn’t confirm a cause of death but told the Times that Whiteman’s death was under investigation.
