Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

The summer I was 11 I forced my little sister and neighbor to create a neighborhood "newspaper" called the "Scenic View Sizzler."

Have you ever used a typewriter?

If I answer yes I am either a. old or b. a hipster. Neither is good.

How is social media changing news?

Making it newsier, faster, more interactive, more ultimately accurate.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Lois Lane, of course.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To be curious

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email. Maybe Twitter. Don't even think of calling.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Macs by the armfuls, iPhones (2 of them), Word, Excel, Powepoint, Wordpress, Google Docs, Hipchat, Slack, Outlook, multiple others I forget.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter, by a mile. (Sorry Muck Rack.) I love the scrum and the serendipity of finding new things to read and view.

Who do you wish followed you?

Sheryl Sandberg

Why did you become a journalist?

Age 11, when I created my own neighborhood summer newspaper called "The Scenic View Sizzler."

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Please, of course I did. And yes I was the editor-in-chief.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

A slew of post 9/11 pieces on the politicization of evangelical Christianity (led by the White House) against Islam.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Be intensely curious about everything. Meet everyone you can. Learn to write, and I mean really learn to *write.*

When's the best time to pitch you?

Sunday evening.
