At this time of year, the waters of Whyalla are normally home to tens of thousands of giant Australian cuttlefish, but so far this winter, they haven't arrived in even close to those numbers. Marine experts fear the harmful algal bloom has had a devastating impact on the species, which annually breeds in the Upper Spencer Gulf.

In 1949, more than 100 Indigenous people were hired for the feature film Bitter Springs under somewhat peculiar circumstances. For one, none of them had ever acted before; for another, they had to make up their own dialogue in one of the first films to tell the story of Aboriginal land theft and displacement. But despite the odds, the film was filled with scenes of the Anangu actors' improvised work.

Whyalla locals call for more certainty around steelworks' future amid news of final bidders

Whyalla locals have welcomed more certainty about the future ownership of the city's steelworks, but say it is still not enough to warrant business investment and workers coming back to the Spencer Gulf. Premier Peter Malinauskas announced on Wednesday that M Resources and Jindal Steel had been chosen as the two remaining bidders for the troubled steelworks, while BlueScope Steel retains its right of last offer.
