Leading the series in two of its main roles are two of the biggest young stars in Hollywood currently: Austin Butler and Barry Keoghan, both of whom are excellent as Major Gale ‘Buck’ Cleven and Lieutenant Curtis Biddick respectively. Butler and Keoghan each lose themselves in their characters, helping to bring to life these two real life pilots from the war, but the series belong to Callum Turner and Anthony Boyle as Major John ‘Bucky’ Egan and Lieutenant Harry Crosby respectively.

Contemporarily, we struggle with people worried about representation sometimes. It's a burden, as artists, that we take on that limits the work. It limits the characters people play. It limits the roles they want to do. Dee Rees
The Last Thing He Wanted (2020)
I just created an account specifically for this review. That's how bad, pointless, and confusing this movie was. I felt something in my soul that said I had to let the world know. Plot: Bad/Pointless Continuity: None Doesn't tie everything in at any point Feeling: Am I dumb, did I miss something, or is this movie actually this bad? This film has prompted several questions Who OK'd this film to be released? Will I ever forgive myself for wasting 2 hours of my life?

The Last Thing He Wanted
By Lorry Kikta | January 31, 2020 SUNDANCE 2020 FILM FESTIVAL REVIEW! Mudbound was a masterpiece, and I was very excited to be able to watch the newest film from writer-director Dee Rees.It turns out that The Last Thing He Wanted was the last thing I wanted to watch. I just could not get invested in this film except for tiny bits and pieces. Just know that it absolutely pains me to say this.

Revisiting Seminal LGBTQ Film Pariah
News Journalist and critic Valerie Complex says this pioneering lesbian drama came into her life at a crucial time. by Valerie Complex | June 19, 2019 | My connection to Dee Rees’ Pariah began one night at a Berlin bar. On New Year’s Eve 2009, I headed out for a drink in the German city, where I was stationed in the Air Force.
'Mudbound' starring Garrett Hedlund (Netflix)
Set in the post-WWII South, Mudbound is an epic story of two families pitted against a barbaric social hierarchy and an unrelenting landscape as they simultaneously fight the battle at home and the battle abroad. The film is about friendship, unacknowledged heritage and the unending struggle for and against the land. Newly transplanted from the quiet civility of Memphis, the McAllan family is underprepared and overly hopeful for Henry’s (Jason Clarke) grandiose farming dreams.

The 2018 Vanity Fair Hall of Fame
Oh, what a stormy year. While many of the nation’s leaders went low, these unconventional heroes went high, taking risks—and taking a stand. Reviving a V.F. tradition begun in 1913, we nominate a group of newsmakers for our annual Hall of Fame, photographed by Annie Leibovitz. And to toast our inductees, we’ve matched each one with with a cultural luminary who is sure to understand how his or her subject stood out in a year of rapid-fire news made by big personalities.

Carey Mulligan: ‘If Dee Rees was a white man, she’d be directing the next Star Wars’
I was waiting to cover this until the Oscar nominations came out, because I wanted to see if Mudbound’s quiet Oscar campaign worked at all. It didn’t – Mary J. Blige got an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and Virgil Williams and Dee Rees got nominated for Adapted Screenplay, but the film was snubbed for Best Picture, and Dee Rees was snubbed for Best Director (she would have been the first African-American woman to be nominated).
Mudbound Review 2017 | Movie Review | Contactmusic.com
Director-cowriter Dee Rees (Bessie) gives this 1940s drama such an epic scale that it might have played out better as a TV miniseries, with more time to flesh out the characters and complex situations. But the themes are so vivid that it still gets under the skin, and the nonstop voiceover from a variety of characters adds plenty of thoughtful insight. If only there were fewer plot details brought over from Hillary Jordan's source novel, it might be an easier film to identify with.
Review: ‘Mudbound’ Is a Racial Epic Tuned to Black Lives, and White Guilt
“Mudbound” is a movie about how things change — slowly, unevenly, painfully. It is also, as the title suggests, about how things don’t change, about the stubborn forces of custom, prejudice and power that lock people in place and impede social progress.
The Way to Last is Always to Be a Creator: Dee Rees on Screenwriting
What are you obsessed with? What are you afraid of? What makes you excited? What makes you laugh? Whatever that is, that’s what you should write about. Because writing is hard. Your first draft is not going to be your best draft. You’re going to be churning out hundreds of pages. So it has to be something you are obsessed with and are trying to uncover. That’s going to be the basis for a screenplay that has heart. Try to start away from the computer. The blinking cursor can be a turn off.
Dee Rees on Mary. J Blige's Acting Career: 'She Doesn't Have a Star Attitude'
The "Mudbound" director recalls what it was like to meet the woman "whose music was the soundtrack of my college years." Mary J. Blige is one of the six names in entertainment being celebrated at the inaugural IndieWire Honors on Nov. 2. While she is world-renowned as a singer, she has been generating acclaim for her supporting turn as Florence in Dee Rees’ Southern period drama “Mudbound” since the film premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. For more on Blige’s side of the story, go here.
Name 5 Female Directors Besides Ava DuVernay -- The Cut
|
What was the last film you saw that was directed by a woman, and what was her name? Did you just think of Ava DuVernay? When the Cut asked this question at various events this awards season, so did most Hollywood insiders. But here’s the thing: Selma is from last awards season. It’s not surprising that few of the actors, directors, and other industry denizens we approached could name women other than DuVernay: just 9 percent of 2015’s top 250 films were directed by women.
