The suspect — Keith Demery of Ellenwood, Georgia — called police around 6 a.m. Saturday and asked for an officer to respond to a hotel on Davidson Avenue in Franklin Township for a report of injuries, Somerset County Prosecutor John McDonald said in a statement.

Essex County Published: Feb. 21, 2026, 3:52 p.m. Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting of a 62-year-old man in Newark early Saturday morning, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. The shooting occurred around 3:38 a.m., officials said in a press release. Police responded to a 911 call reporting a man with a gunshot wound outside a building on Lexington Street, the prosecutor’s office said.
