The owner of the defunct Gryphon restaurant in downtown Burlington is accused of fraudulently transferring more than $1.5 million to his ex-wife to avoid paying the Vermont and New Hampshire victims whose life savings he squandered as their investment manager. Thomas Chadwick closed the mainstay restaurant last fall and immediately filed for bankruptcy.

Attorney general clears trooper who shot and killed Putney man in mental health crisis

A state trooper who shot and killed a man who was having a mental health crisis in Putney last year will not face criminal charges. Vermont State Police trooper Peter Romeo had a legal basis to shoot 55-year-old Scott Garvey during a standoff at the man’s apartment, Attorney General Charity Clark determined Tuesday. The prosecutor’s opinion came nearly one year after Garvey’s death on July 7, 2025, which his family members have maintained was preventable.
