ECONOMY Revamped 40-year-old trains will boost Athens metro schedule Fourteen revamped trains first used in 1985 will gradually join the Athens metro fleet starting this summer and ending in 2027. They will be exclusively used on Line 1 (Piraeus-Kifissia), the system’s oldest, that is widely plagued by delays, overcrowding and, as importantly in a city with a long, hot summer, lack of air conditioning.

ECONOMY TRANSPORT New look to Athens Metro Line 1 trains The Transport Ministry presented on Tuesday the first fully rebuilt Athens Metro Line 1 (ISAP) train. It is just one out of 14 eighth-generation trains that entered service between 1983 and 1985. The goal, after the reconstruction of all trains, is to reduce the frequency of services from 8.5 minutes last year to just 5 minutes by 2027.
