It’s an investment in more than 417,000 of our students across our 59 campuses, providing the workforce-ready graduates and dynamic leaders our state and communities need.

Vekich, Malhotra: Reimagining Minnesota State: The forces of change are gathering speed
Higher education both nationally and here in Minnesota is facing powerful forces of change. Some of these forces include: Minnesota’s workforce is getting older, and the pool of students entering college to replace retirees is getting smaller. These demographic shifts are reducing the size of Minnesota’s future workforce. Populations that are seeing growth, including communities of color and those of native origin, have been historically underserved by higher education.
COMMENTARY: Working Together to Meet Pressing Workforce Needs
All across the nation, legislators and employers alike are concerned about a shortage of qualified workers. A number of factors are at play in this, including a low unemployment rate, a decreasing pool of high school graduates, a shift in population from rural areas to the Twin Cities metro and a large wave of baby boomer retirements. Over 10 years, the Minnesota economy will need to fill over one million jobs.

COMMENTARY: Minnesota colleges offer answer to ‘help wanted’ signs everywhere
Much is at stake for Minnesota as the legislative session nears its conclusion, but nothing puts the social and economic future of communities across the entire state at risk more than the substantial workforce shortage we face. The extent of the problem becomes very real when you travel Minnesota and see “Help Wanted” signs just about anywhere you go.
