Hello! I’m Diane Mapes, a longtime Seattle writer. I grew up on a strawberry farm in rural northwest Washington and studied journalism at WWU and creative writing at the UW, although I probably didn’t study either hard enough.

Over the years, I’ve published short stories, humor columns, travel essays, 1,000+ news stories, a funny dating manual, half a 50 Shades parody about zombies and much more. I’ve even won some writing awards!

Dr. Lynn Symonds receives ASCO Career Development Award

Fred Hutch Cancer Center’s Lynn Symonds, MD, who researches and treats breast cancer, received a prestigious American Society of Clinical Oncology Career Development Award for work on a new biomarker for triple-negative breast cancer, or TNBC. Symonds completed her residency and fellowship at Fred Hutch and the University of Washington in 2022, mentoring under breast cancer oncologist and researcher Jennifer Specht, MD.

Small cell lung cancer research gets a boost

Around 15% of lung cancers are classified as “small cell,” so named for the way the cancer cells appear under a microscope when compared to normal cells or the other major subtype, non-small cell lung cancer. Small cell lung cancer, the kind most often linked to smoking, usually begins in the lung’s bronchi, the major airways in the middle of the chest that lead to the lungs. SCLCs are classified as neuroendocrine tumors, an aggressive subtype that grows rapidly.
