Detecting genetic interactions that have a key role in cancer is important for improving treatment strategies. A hybrid incompatibility is a genetic interaction that reduces the fitness of a hybrid offspring that is produced by mating between two divergent individuals. Certain hybrid incompatibilities can lead to melanoma in swordtail fish of the genus Xiphophorus. This observation makes these fish a powerful model for studying how gene regulation and background influence melanoma risk.
