Dass sich das wissenschaftliche Publikationssystem in einer Krise befindet, ist inzwischen ein breiter Konsens quer durch die Wissenschaften. Die Probleme sind vielfältig, einschlägige Analysen und Lösungsvorschläge häufen sich. Frau Gehring hat kürzlich eine solche Analyse vorgestellt[1], mit einem besonderen Fokus auf einen der Lösungsvorschläge, nämlich das Diamond Open Access (DOA) Prinzip[2].

Fast evolutionary turnover and overlapping variances of sex-biased gene expression patterns defy a simple binary sex classification of somatic tissues

Our results show that somatic sex-biased genes do not only evolve fast between lineages, but they also represent the fraction of genes that are more variable within lineages. This implies that they contribute more to individual variation than non-sex-biased genes.

Mouse data includes bulk RNA-Seq from wild mouse populations, an inbred mouse strain, and wild mouse families. Many of these data were part of a parallel study on sex-biased gene expression [11]. In this study we found that while outlier expression can affect the statistical analysis of sex-biased gene expression, it shows no specific sex-related patterns. For the present study we have therefore used both pure sex, as well as mixed-sex samples.
