Dina Vardal

Dina Vardal is a retired law enforcement officer, military veteran, and devoted mother who grew up in Joliet, Illinois, surrounded by the traditions of her Greek and Italian heritage. She dedicated over two decades to public service, serving as a SWAT officer, firearms instructor, and helicopter mechanic with the Army National Guard. Even after retiring, she continued giving back as a substitute teacher and community volunteer, balancing professional discipline with personal warmth.

Her childhood was shaped by the entrepreneurial spirit of her immigrant parents. Her father came from the Greek island of Mykonos, while her mother was from Ferrara, Italy, and together they created a home filled with culture and tradition. Dina’s family operated Mykonos Gyros, a community hub in Joliet during the 1980s, while also maintaining Vardal Engineering, a family business founded in 1958 that still thrives today. These experiences instilled resilience, work ethic, and community values.

At 17, Dina enlisted in the Army National Guard, beginning a path of lifelong service. While training and serving, she pursued education, earning an associate degree in Law Enforcement at Joliet Junior College and later a bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Years later, she further advanced her studies, earning a master’s in Organizational Development from Benedictine University in 2007, showing her commitment to growth despite career demands.

Her law enforcement career spanned multiple roles, including SWAT officer, firearms instructor, and mentor to recruits. She thrived in high-pressure situations, demonstrating calm focus and tactical expertise. At the same time, she served in the National Guard for 22 years, working as a helicopter mechanic on UH-1H, Blackhawk, and Chinook aircraft, later becoming a crew chief and physical fitness coordinator. Tours in Panama and Germany expanded her cultural perspective and deepened her leadership skills.

Beyond her professional life, Dina Vardal found joy in teaching elementary and middle school students as a substitute teacher. She is passionate about travel, especially yearly visits to Greece, enjoys scuba diving, and finds peace in gardening. Cooking remains a cherished pastime, with her Greek dishes well-loved among family and friends. Above all, she treasures her role as a mother, finding her greatest joy in raising her daughter, Danira, and cherishing their time together.
