From informal hawkers to state employees: newspaper vendors’ labor incorporation and identity reconstruction in Shanghai, 1911–1956
ABSTRACT This article examines the transformation of Shanghai’s newspaper vendors from marginalized hawkers to state workers between 1911 and 1956. Vendors operated in a guild-based, hierarchical system dominated by powerful wholesalers, functioning largely beyond state control through informal rules and territorial monopolies.

Decoding the sequence determinants of locus-specific DNA methylation across human tissues
Abstract DNA methylation is a fundamental epigenetic modification that plays crucial roles in transcriptional regulation, cellular differentiation, and genome stability. However, how locus-specific DNA methylation is determined by intrinsic DNA sequence remains poorly understood. Here, we introduce Melody, a deep learning framework that predicts DNA methylation from 10-kb genomic sequences, enabling the integration of both local and long-range sequence signals.
Computer Science > Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition
Large vision-language models (LVLMs) often hallucinate objects that are absent from an image. Despite recent progress, existing mitigation methods still lack reliable object-level grounding diagnostics and therefore tend to apply coarse-grained interventions, which can impair visual understanding, shorten responses, and reduce coverage of genuinely grounded objects.
Computer Science > Artificial Intelligence
Large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESSs) require O&M decisions that combine alarms, cell-level measurements, device topology, diagnostic tables, historical cases, and maintenance documents. Monitoring platforms can flag threshold violations, but they often cannot explain whether voltage inconsistency, resistance drift, short-circuit risk, capacity divergence, or thermal abnormality needs intervention.

Dietary fat sources and levels of Vitamin E isoforms impact belly and bacon quality of heavy slaughter weight pigs
Photo credit: Getty Images: igorr1 Introduction Due to the increasing cost of feed ingredients, producers have increasingly adopted alternative feedstuffs, including fat sources and dried distillers’ grains with solubles (DDGS). In response to these challenges, the swine industry has developed leaner pig genotypes, often through the supplementation of diets with unsaturated fat sources, which results in a higher proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids in pork.

In-depth analysis of the steady operation of SAD (Simultaneous Anammox and Denitrification) process with added recirculation
ABSTRACT The slow formation of simultaneous anammox and denitrification (SAD) granular sludge remains a major challenge for its practical application. This study developed a novel strategy for rapid cultivation of SAD granular sludge in lab-scale UASB reactors using synthetic wastewater and municipal sludge as inoculum. By introducing a recirculation system, we significantly enhanced sludge granulation, system stability, and nutrient removal performance.
Adaptive optimised backstepping control of output-constrained nonlinear systems with input delay
Abstract In this paper, an adaptive critic method is developed for addressing the optimised backstepping (OB) control of uncertain nonlinear systems. The identifier-critic-action architecture is constructed combined with neural networks. Besides, the barrier Lyapunov function (BLF) is used to handle output constraints. To simplify the backstepping design and improve computational efficiency, Pade approximation is utilised for the input delay, rather than Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals.

SERPINB6 Promotes Epithelial‐Mesenchymal Transition via PI3K/AKT/mTOR Signalling Pathway in Glioma
1 Introduction Glioma, especially glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), is the most common and highly malignant type of brain cancer in the central nervous system [1]. Classified as a grade IV glioma by the World Health Organisation, even with comprehensive treatment methods such as surgical resection, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, the average survival period for patients typically does not exceed 15 months [2].

Molecular Engineering of Residual Lithium Compounds for Stable LiNi0.92Co0.05Mn0.03O2 Cathodes
Molecular Engineering of Residual Lithium Compounds for Stable LiNi0.92Co0.05Mn0.03O2 Cathodes Residual lithium compounds (RLCs) on the surface of high-nickel layered oxides aggravate battery capacity decay, irreversible phase transformation and safety hazards, hindering the development of high-energy density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Conventional physical and chemical methods not only increase the steps required to address RLCs but also fail to fully resolve the issues.

Electric-field-induced domain walls in wurtzite ferroelectrics - Nature
Abstract Wurtzite ferroelectrics have transformative potential for next-generation microelectronics. A comprehensive understanding of their ferroelectric properties and domain energetics is crucial for tailoring their ferroelectric characteristics and exploiting their functional properties in practical devices. Despite burgeoning interest, the exact configurations and electronic structures of domain walls in wurtzite ferroelectrics remain elusive.
Value‐Iteration‐Based Robust Adaptive Critic for Disturbed Non‐Affine Continuous‐Time Systems
In this paper, a novel value-iteration-based adaptive critic scheme is developed to address the control problem for non-linear non-affine continuous-time (CT) systems with disturbances. Recurrent neural networks are employed to model the non-linear non-affine systems, thereby covering the unknown system dynamics. Based on the transformation of the optimal-robust problem, the control issue is established to deal with disturbances.
