Departure from cooperative convention For decades, whole-brain computational models were based on an underlying assumption: that communication and coordination between different brain regions happen through purely positive, or cooperative, couplings only. This means that any positive correlations between brain areas were thought to be due to shared excitation, while negative correlations, when found, were dismissed as modelling artifacts or data noise.
