Abstract The top-down goal voluntarily maintains and selectively recalls items in visual working memory (VWM). In contrast, bottom-up attentional selection due to stimulus-driven selection by saliency or relational account, like in perceptually similar items has been found to prioritize items and facilitate recalling them in VWM involuntarily.
