Round the Island Race 2026 David Harding Photo Gallery by David Harding 13 Jul 05:55 PDT We have some great shots from another photographer busy in the Solent at the weekend. "The trouble is that when you think like a racing sailor, you sometimes photograph like a racing sailor.

Poole Yacht Racing Association's Poole Bay Summer Series - Day 1 by David Harding 18 May 13:57 BST Poole Yacht Racing Association (PYRA) has organised a series of bay races from May to September, on one Sunday a month. They're free to enter and open to any boat with a VPRS rating. The first race, run by Parkstone Yacht Club on behalf of PYRA, was held on 10th May in a north-easterly breeze that gusted to well over 20 knots and kicked up a lumpy sea.

Looking Ahead to 2026: Getting a Boost from the Great Rebound
This article is part of Bain's 2026 M&A Report. The year 2025 marked a near-record rebound in M&A, with global deal value rising 40%, to $4.9 trillion. Total M&A as a percentage of nominal GDP grew from 3.2% to 4.2% (see Figure 1). The rebound of 2025 was notably broad-based across industries and geographies, and it was fueled by a resurgence in megadeals valued at greater than $5 billion (see “Looking Back at M&A in 2025: Behind the Great Rebound”). The wave may not have crested.
Looking Back at M&A in 2025: Behind the Great Rebound
In a year marked by artificial intelligence’s rampant advancement, shifting trade policies, and tepid global volume growth, companies across industries saw the urgent need to reboot strategy. And for many, that meant a return to M&A. The year 2025 is on track to become the second-highest in deal activity: up 36% in value, to an estimated $4.8 trillion, and 5% in volume (see Figure 1), with similar gains across strategic, private equity (PE), and venture capital (VC) acquirers.
Bidding a fond farewell to Stowe
To the Editor: On Friday, we sold our house after 30 wonderful years in Stowe. We have such deep gratitude to so many who made our life rich. Lynn and Jim kicked it all off. Christine taught our boys adventure. It was fun to dream about an arts scene in town with JSM. Lynn P. made it happen. Thank you, Johanes, for the Meadow. Tony, Patty and Brian, along with so many others, fed us. Karen and Ross, what wonderful bread. We will never forget your loss.

Abstract This research project, reported in three parts, focuses on Henry Nock’s ‘screwless lock’, or, as it is called in documents at the time of its manufacture, the ‘Duke’s Lock’, in the most important production variant of this novel and sophisticated design. This is the 5.5in long ‘Type 2’ Duke’s Lock, as fitted to the final design iteration of the Board of Ordnance’s Duke of Richmond’s Musket (DoRM), namely its rammer-to-the-muzzle (RTM) version.

AI Tools That Instantly Make Your Small Business Look Bigger
Perception matters. Customers often judge whether they'll work with you based on how "professional" you look. The challenge? Most small business owners don't have big-company budgets. That's where AI levels the playing field. For just a few dollars a month, you can give your business the same polish and presence as companies ten times your size. Here are five AI tools that instantly make your small business look bigger and more credible. 1.
Poole Week 2025, in association with Haven Knox-Johnston - Day 6 Original
Poole Week 2025, in association with Haven Knox-Johnston - Day 6 by David Harding 30 Aug 16:19 BST A (Relatively) Gentle Way To Wind Up The Week After one of most consistently breezy Poole Weeks of recent years, everyone was hoping that the wind had seen the forecast for Friday and would know that it was supposed to moderate. Thankfully it did. It wasn't exactly a zephyr even so, with a mean wind speed of 10-14 knots from the west and the occasional gust into the 20s.
AI Chatbots That Actually Close Sales (And How to Build One Fast)
Most people still think of chatbots as clunky little boxes on websites that can barely answer "What are your opening hours?" But in 2025, chatbots have grown up. Thanks to AI, today's bots don't just answer FAQs - they can qualify leads, nurture prospects, and even close sales. And here's the kicker: you don't need a coding background to build one. Here's how small businesses (and side hustlers) can build an AI chatbot that actually drives revenue. 1.
3 No-Code Tools That Replace an Assistant for $50 a Month
Hiring an assistant sounds like a dream for most small business owners and freelancers. Someone to manage your calendar, organize your tasks, and keep the admin pile under control. But assistants cost hundreds (if not thousands) a month - way out of reach for most. The good news is, you can get 80% of the same benefits for less than $50 a month using AI-powered no-code tools. Here are three tools that can act as your "digital assistant" - without the salary. 1.
The AI Toolkit Every Freelancer Needs in 2025
Freelancing is freedom - but it also comes with a price: you're not just the worker, you're the accountant, marketer, project manager, and customer service rep. That juggling act eats up time that should be spent on actual client work. The good news? In 2025, you don't need to do it all yourself. The right set of AI tools can handle the bulk of admin, promotion, and even creative work for you. Here's the AI toolkit every freelancer should be using this year. 1.
Stop Paying for Social Media Managers
Social media has become the modern shopfront. If you're not posting regularly, you look invisible. The problem is, most small business owners don't have the time (or budget) to hire a social media manager. That's where AI steps in. For less than the cost of a single dinner out, you can automate 80% of your social posting. Here's how to run consistent, professional-looking social media for just $29 a month. 1.
How to Build a $500/Month AI Automation Service in 10 Hours
Most people think starting a business means months of planning, thousands in upfront costs, and a complicated setup. That may have been true in the past - but not anymore. With the rise of AI and no-code automation tools, you can now launch a service in a single weekend, often in less than 10 hours of work. In this playbook, I'll show you how to build a $500/month AI automation service that runs on autopilot once it's set up. 1.
The $200 Side Hustle: Launching an AI-Powered Review Service
Every small business knows that Google reviews can make or break them. A local café with 50 glowing reviews looks more trustworthy than one with five. But here’s the catch — most owners hate asking customers to leave reviews. That gap is where you come in. With less than $200 and a few AI-powered tools, you can launch a review-automation side hustle that businesses will gladly pay $99 a month for. Here’s exactly how to set it up: Professionalism matters.
Stop Wasting Hours - 5 AI Tools That Automate Admin for Small Business Owners
One minute you’re serving customers, the next you’re doing invoices, replying to emails, or chasing suppliers. The problem? Admin never ends. In fact, studies show that small business owners spend up to 16 hours a week on paperwork and routine admin. That’s two full working days where you’re not actually growing your business. The good news is, AI can now handle much of that “busy work” for you.
Poole Week 2025, in association with Haven Knox-Johnston - Day 3 Original
Poole Week 2025, in association with Haven Knox-Johnston - Day 3 by David Harding 27 Aug 05:53 BST All Change On The Western Front If you like sailing in windy weather, the Tuesday of Poole Week was a day to savour. Some love the excitement, the challenge, the satisfaction of a job well done if you get around the course, and the sense of exhilaration and relief when you return to shore for a well-earned beer or two. Others simply don't enjoy it, and would rather not sail.
Poole Week 2025 - Day 2 Original
Poole Week 2025 - Day 2 by David Harding 26 Aug 06:55 BST Monday Sun-Day (Again) It's rare to have weather that's as similar on two successive days as it was on the Sunday and Monday of Poole Week 2025. Monday was, like Sunday, a beautiful day on the water (for Mamas and Papas as well as any of their children who happened to be out there - and if you don't understand that reference in relation to the title, you're too young and will have to ask your aged relatives).
Poole Week 2025 - Day 1 Original
Poole Week 2025 - Day 1 by David Harding 25 Aug 07:47 BST It would have been hard to ask for better sailing conditions than those that greeted the competitors in Poole Week as they headed out into the harbour for the first day of racing. They were met with a sun that just didn't blink, and a south-easterly wind of 12-16 knots that, on the Parkstone platform, hardly moved from 130 degrees all day.

M&A in a New Economic World Order
The tariffs announced on April 2, 2025, marked the end of the beginning for a new economic world order. The effect on dealmaking has been swift, with strategic M&A dropping by 39% in April. Now, as companies wrestle with the immediate and long-term impacts on strategy and the rising risk of recession, those that thrive will rapidly retool for a world in which the free movement of goods, capital, IP, and people cannot be taken for granted.

Looking Ahead to 2025: Preparing for What Comes Next
This article is part of Bain's 2025 M&A Report. After three years of underwhelming M&A activity, 2025 may finally be the year that the M&A market breaks through. Foundational shifts in technology, sector profit pools, and the broader global economy demanded a strategic response.

Bournemouth Digital Poole Week 2024 - Overall Original
Bournemouth Digital Poole Week 2024 - Overall by David Harding 31 Aug 20:13 BST Studies in concentration A lot happened on the final day of Poole Week 2024. The wind was in one of its light and fickle moods, the tide was ebbing for the first starts, and the harbour was busy with traffic that had been mercifully light earlier in the week.
Bournemouth Digital Poole Week 2024 - Day 5
Bournemouth Digital Poole Week 2024 - Day 5 by David Harding 29 Aug 22:18 PDT It might be in the realms of fantasy to imagine that what one writes in the report of one day's racing in a regatta could conceivably have a bearing on what the weather gods dish up the next day. Nonetheless, on the Thursday of Poole Week it was almost as though Zephyrus - god of the west wind - had read our report on Wednesday's racing and decided he needed to assert himself.
Bournemouth Digital Poole Week 2024 - Day 4 Original
Bournemouth Digital Poole Week 2024 - Day 4 by David Harding 29 Aug 06:30 BST Fickle winds and fluctuating fortunes Wednesday was to have been a day of round-the-harbour courses for most of the fleets racing in Poole Week.
Bournemouth Digital Poole Week 2024 - Day 3
Bournemouth Digital Poole Week 2024 - Day 3 by David Harding 27 Aug 20:46 PDT Blow the wind Southerly (sometimes with a bit of East in it too) Poole Harbour was very much a harbour of two halves on the Tuesday of Poole Week. In the top triangle, sailing area for the Flying Fifteens and ILCAs (Lasers in old money), the wind started in the south and pretty well stayed there. It swung left and right, making for challenging racing and resulting in a few high scores for some of the leading boats.
Bournemouth Digital Poole Week 2024 - Day 2 Original
Bournemouth Digital Poole Week 2024 - Day 2 by David Harding 27 Aug 07:06 BST A stunning day of sun, wind and sparkle After the first day of Poole Week was blown off by winds gusting to well over 30 knots, Monday produced the sort of conditions that showed Poole Harbour at its best: 16-20 knots of breeze from the south-west, combined with almost wall-to-wall sunshine. The tide made sure there was plenty of water, while the wind kicked up some decent waves that added to the fun downwind.
Bournemouth Digital Poole Week 2024 - Day 1 Original
Bournemouth Digital Poole Week 2024 - Day 1 by David Harding 26 Aug 05:59 BST A windy welcome to the week Has anyone noticed that 2024 has been rather breezy? Last year, some regattas and championships were struggling with lack of wind. That hasn't been a problem on the whole this year. Just think back to significant markers in the racing calendar such as the Round the Island Race and the Fastnet.

We live in a county steeped in history. Even though this is my fourth year working for the nonprofit Hunterdon County Historical Society (HCHS), I still come across documents or bits of information from our collections that surprise me.
