Don Chance: The home run that broke more than a window
When we were children, we often thought that adults existed primarily to make rules and punish us when we broke them. But sometimes kids get an opportunity to learn how wrong they are. Growing up in Selma, Ala., the school superintendent, Mr. Pickard, was the epitome of rigid rules to us children. He certainly looked the part. Tall and imposing, with a firm, no-nonsense look, Mr. Pickard always wore a suit with a white shirt and a dark tie.
Your Financial Advisor’s Best Performing Asset is You
Recently I got my hair cut. When we were finished, I looked in the mirror. I whipped out my credit card, added a tip, and walked out with a full understanding of what I had paid and what I had received. Why can’t financial advice be like that? I cannot think of a single other personal service we purchase in which the cost people pay and the service they receive are so opaque. Dentist? Veterinarian? Car repair shop? Accountant? Lawyer? It’s clear what you pay and what you get.

The Risk Management of COVID-19: Lessons from Financial Economics and Financial Risk Management
The COVID-19 pandemic was one of the most significant events in human history. In early October 2023, the World Health Organization reported there had been more than 770 million confirmed cases, which is about 1 in every 10.3 people, with approximately seven million deaths.
The Class Certification of Exchange-Listed Options in Securities Class-Action Litigation
Class-action litigation for fraud on the market typically focuses on purchasers and sellers of stock. Yet those that traded in options on the shares can also be harmed. In a recent paper, we draw from experience in In re Apple, Inc. Securities Litigation (N.D. Cal. 2022) to describe the issues related to including options in a certified class in the face of substantial opposition from defendants.
Letter to the Editor: LSU fails to accommodate visually disabled faculty members
In 2019, LSU forced its faculty to get its materials compliant with federal laws regarding accessibility for the disabled. It was certainly a lot of work. LSU must feel good about it. But I am someone it was supposed to help, and it didn’t. And while our classes are now legally compliant, LSU failed to get its own house in order. About three years ago, I sustained a stroke that caused significant loss of vision. I am far from blind but seeing is much harder. These mandates were supposed to help me.
Guest column: Without flood insurance, the risk is all yours
I have lived in Louisiana the past 13 years and have been amazed at how people make decisions on whether to buy flood insurance. Federal banking and mortgage laws and private borrower requirements mandate that banks require most mortgage borrowers to have flood insurance if the property is inside the 100-year flood plain, which is defined as an area in which it would be expected to flood once in 100 years.
