Peter Hollingworth devoted much of his life to fighting poverty, but will be remembered as the governor-general who was forced from office because of the way he handled sexual abuse cases as an archbishop. Australia's only clerical viceroy spent less than two years at Yarralumla before bowing to ferocious pressures and resigning in May 2003. Peter John Hollingworth AO OBE, who died on Tuesday aged 91, was born in Adelaide on April 10, 1935.

Anthony Mason presided over one of the most adventurous and contentious High Courts in Australia's history. As chief justice from 1987 to 1995, Sir Anthony led a court that made landmark decisions and ended its long history of legalism, or adhering strictly to precedent and the text of the constitution. Instead, the court tried to interpret the law in ways that would allow it to take account of Australia's changing social and economic circumstances.

Ron Boswell was the shambling, unkempt coalitionist and conscience of the Queensland Nationals for more than 30 years. The long-time Nationals senate leader may never have made it to the ministry, but he was a key deal-maker and the chief opponent of extremists who beguiled or frightened some of his colleagues. Perhaps his finest hour was his defeat of Pauline Hanson in a desperate battle for the last Queensland senate seat in 2001.
