Mental health impacts of gambling on college students
Gambling could be taking a greater mental toll on college students, according to a new study. Researchers surveyed more than 1800 people and published their findings in the International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction. Overall, about 25 percent of students had gambled in the past year, and seven percent showed signs of gambling addiction. As a result, students who already were struggling with anxiety, depression, or substance abuse only saw those problems increase as they gambled.

Arkansas now has 173 confirmed cases. Across the country, two people have died in Michigan after contracting the Cyclospora parasite. The deaths are confirmed to be the first in the outbreak of the extensive diarrhea-causing illness.

The human trial is all part of an attempt by the University of Oxford to stop an outbreak of the deadly virus in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The early-stage trial will follow 50 healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 55 to see how they react to the shot.

Study: Working out regularly might protect against genetic heart problems
People who exercise regularly have a lower risk of heart problems linked to a genetic condition, according to a new study. Researchers found that people who have higher levels of physical activity have lower rates of heart problems brought on by genetically driven cardiomyopathy, which is a major cause of heart failure and sudden cardiac death. Families with a history of the condition have a higher risk for heart problems.

Getting 8,500 steps a day might prevent you from regaining weight after dieting. That’s according to a study that looked at data from almost 4,000 people who participated in multiple trials focused on weight loss and maintenance. Those who increased their steps to 8,500 each day during their weight loss phase, and kept their steps up afterwards, had a higher success rate of keeping the weight off long term.

Revolution Medicines shared the findings of its Phase 3 clinical trial, which evaluated the drug Daraxonrasib in patients with metastatic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma who had been previously treated.
Diagnostic testing paused by CDC for some infectious diseases
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has paused diagnostic testing for a series of common and more rare infectious diseases. The CDC posted a list last week of the 27 diseases for which diagnostic testing is temporarily unavailable. The list includes rabies, mpox (monkeypox), and more. It’s not immediately clear why these tests have been paused. The CDC has downsized since Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. became secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is working with young researchers to figure out how E-cigs are being promoted to children and teens. The E-cigs are being put into molds shaped like everyday objects, which might appeal to younger people.
Infant sleepsuits recalled due to choking hazard
A brand of infant sleepsuits sold at Walmart is being recalled. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says the zipper on HALO Magic Sleepsuits could detach, resulting in a choking hazard. The products were sold on HALO’s website, and online at Amazon and Walmart from last September to last month. No injuries have been reported, but the CPSC advises to stop using the product. If you bought one, you can contact HALO for a coupon or store credit.
Measles cases continue alarming rise in the U.S., health officials say
New information from a federal health agency on measles cases so far this year indicates a possible new yearly record ahead. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says, as of February 26, the U.S. has recorded 1,136 confirmed cases of measles. The agency says that’s six times more than a typical year. The majority of cases were reported in 28 jurisdictions, with South Carolina having the highest number.

The respiratory virus is spread via air droplets when someone contagious is coughing, sneezing, or talking.

Don Rhoads never used to be emotional, but he is now and for good reason. On March 2, 2021, Don received a gift he never wanted but was thankful to get. He now tells a story of courage, faith, disappointment and inspiration. It’s a routine Don abides by religiously. Medicine, he puts in his pill box weekly, sometimes daily, about 14 different drugs in the morning and again at night. “If I didn’t have an alarm that goes off at 9:00 and 9:00, I might forget to take my medicine,” he said.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) locked down the Dilley Immigration Processing Center in South Texas on Sunday due to a measles outbreak. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said that the Texas Department of State Health Services confirmed Saturday that two detainees at the center had contracted measles.

A new study shows that since 2017, the proportion of newborns not receiving vitamin K shots has increased by 77%.

Diabetes management can create anxiety, experts say
November is Diabetes Awareness Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one in 10 people nationwide has it. They have either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. People with Type 1 diabetes make very little or no insulin, so they usually have to take insulin doses each day. With Type 2 diabetes, a person can usually make insulin, but their body doesn’t use it the right way.

As Fall begins, Daylight Saving Time comes to an end, and we fall back an hour, gaining an extra hour of sleep. Some experts say the back and forth of time change can cause disruptions to our sleep. New studies show that springing forward an hour and falling back an hour is the worst thing for our sleep health. Researchers from Stanford University suggest sticking to one set time year-round for optimal sleep results. Standard time will last from Saturday, Nov.

Whooping cough cases on the rise in U.S.
New data shows that whooping cough cases are on the rise in the U.S., and experts say newborns are most at risk. The lead author for the study in the journal Pediatrics says vaccination for expectant mothers is “critical.” The new study found that babies who contracted whooping cough or pertussis are hospitalized. As for symptoms, experts say that while the actual cough may not be there, the apnea, or breathing interruption, is common.
