Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
Midnight shift crime beat reporter.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
My typing classes in elementary school were on typewriters. One of the bonuses of growing up in super-poor, southeastern Ohio Appalachia.
How is social media changing news?
It's eliminating antiquated forms of story telling and information distribution -- sometimes for the worse, but mostly for the better.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Ben Urich.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
To remain true to yourself and your readers, in print as well as in real life.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
Hastags are serious business.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Email?
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Audio and video editing software (big fan of Audacity), and all of my writing is done in Google Drive.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter.
Who do you wish followed you?
Bill Murray.
Why did you become a journalist?
I like to argue and I appreciate the truth. It was either this or law.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I did not, I was too busy attempting to convince myself that buying a bright yellow, $500 guitar was the ticket to stardom.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
An interview I did with then-CM of Capcom of America, Seth Killian.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Always be willing to do the work, but equally as willing to ask questions and confirm.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Whenever I'm not eating dinner.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
The random people who come into the newsroom's office building off the street, pitching stories about their family.
What's your favorite drink?
Coffee and it's many forms.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
On my couch with my wife and cats, complaining about wrestling.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
Giant Bomb, Slate, LA Times.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That I just sit around doing nothing but playing video games while laughing maniacally.
