Ohio’s annual school report cards typically attract attention each October as Ohio’s public schools compete for which can claim the highest number of stars, or explain away an embarrassingly low number of stars. As The Blade’s Vincent Lucarelli showed Sunday, Ohio’s charter schools — officially known as “community schools” — also are measured by the report cards.

The European Union overreached in its action against X, a U.S.-based social media site, over the blue checkmark. The European Commission ordered X, formerly known as Twitter, to pay a $137 million fine over the misleading use of its blue checkmark. Before Elon Musk bought Twitter, the blue checkmark signified clearly that the contributor was who they said they were. It was a useful indicator. Now, the blue checkmark is less clear, as it can be acquired simply by paying for a premium subscription.

CLARKSTON, Mich. — More than 70 years ago, an unscrupulous and reckless senator from Wisconsin, Joe McCarthy, ruined lives and careers by smearing people as “communists,” often without any evidence whatsoever, during what was called the “Red Scare.” Eventually, he was stopped after the most respected journalist of the day, Edward R. Murrow, devoted an episode of his CBS TV program, See it Now, to examining McCarthy’s methods.

On Nov. 3, voters will be asked to consider a 1.0 mill renewal levy for the Wood County Committee on Aging. It is a renewal, not a new tax, that will continue critical funding that supplies over 70 percent of the operating revenue of the agency. The programs offered through the Committee on Aging help older adults remain active, healthy, and independent.

A woman who filed a lawsuit saying she was sexually assaulted by seven men at a Cornell University fraternity house told police weeks after the incident that she could “say with 100 percent confidence I was raped,” according to a report by CBS New York, which said it obtained a transcript of her interview with investigators. The transcript, which has not been publicly released, raises new questions surrounding the local district attorney’s decision not to prosecute anyone at the time.

BEREA, Ohio — Aaron Rodgers’ NFL farewell tour continues with his final scheduled Thursday night game when the Pittsburgh Steelers face the Cleveland Browns. Even though Rodgers is one win shy of tying Tom Brady (14) for the most QB wins on Thursdays, the Steelers have not had the same success. Pittsburgh is 0-9 on the road when facing an AFC North team on Thursday. “Because there’s not enough damn time to embrace the tape,” defensive tackle Cam Heyward said.

BOWLING GREEN — The Bowling Green State University football team opens Mid-American Conference play against Miami (Ohio), which is seeking a fourth straight conference title game appearance. The Falcons (0-4) travel to the RedHawks (2-2) for the first meeting between the teams since head coach Eddie George took over at Bowling Green. Oxford is a place where BGSU historically struggles, as Miami holds a 24-13-1 all-time advantage at home. “A really good football team,” George said of Miami.
