The case against a former Ohio music pastor who once appeared on “American Idol” went to the jury Tuesday to decide whether he killed his wife while having an affair. Caleb Flynn, 40, is charged with aggravated murder, assault and tampering with evidence in the February shooting of Ashley Flynn, 37, a schoolteacher and volleyball coach. Flynn, who pleaded not guilty, said in a frantic 911 call that a burglar killed her. He faces up to life in prison if convicted on the most serious charges.

WASHINGTON — U.S.-Canada relations, already tense, are likely to deteriorate further after the United States went ahead early Tuesday with a decision to ban nearly $1 billion worth of Canadian imports, including alcoholic beverages, dairy products and motorcycles. The ban amounts to barely a ripple in $880 billion worth of annual two-way trade between the two northern neighbors.

The Maumee Police Department will host a rummage sale on Wednesday and Saturday, the police department said. The rummage sale, at police headquarters, 109 E. Dudley St., will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. All proceeds support the Maumee Fraternal Order of Police, which gives money to important initiatives in the community, the department said.

Nearly a year after Toledo police shot and killed a North Carolina man, the department still will not identify a sergeant believed to have been among the 10 officers who opened fire. Zachary Orion Reed, 22, was fatally shot in October in a parking lot at 3100 Airport Hwy. after police said he drew a handgun on officers following about 30 minutes of negotiations outside a boarded-up retail building. Chief Michael Troendle said officers at the scene fired a total of 59 shots.

To begin with this seems to be an effort to get the courts to approve the arch, the same way they did the ballroom — declare it’s a national emergency; protect the President, protect the city. But those same snipers and drones could just as easily be directed toward protesters and inconvenient demonstrations.
