How to Raise Kids Who Feel Capable in the World
What does it mean to raise a resilient child? Resilience is a skill set that combines emotional awareness, problem solving, and flexibility—qualities that help kids bounce back from stress and adapt to adversity. Parents can help cultivate it by equipping kids with tools to navigate hardships so they feel more confident, courageous, and capable.

How Can Families Cope With Stress Together?
Parenting is an all-consuming job—one that calls for constant caretaking, problem solving, emotional labor, and financial resources. Today, many parents are juggling all of these responsibilities with less emotional support than ever before. Given these pressures, it’s no surprise that parental stress is on the rise. In 2023, nearly 50% of parents surveyed reported feeling overwhelmed most days. That stress doesn’t just affect parents—it can ripple outward.

Why Parents Should Acknowledge Their Anger
Toddler tantrums. Screaming teens. Work stress. Emotional labor. These are just a few things that can spark a parent's outrage. Yet societal messages can make anger seem problematic rather than temporary. Being told that anger "hurts others" or "means we have issues" can lead us to suppress the emotion. This can create more distress in the long run. Research shows that pushing down our anger can lead to symptoms of depression and anxiety. It can also make the emotion roar louder.
I’m a mom and psychologist—parents who are less stressed do 5 things differently: 'It's a win for the entire family'
The demands of raising children have reached a fever pitch. So has parental stress. In a survey of 3,185 adults, nearly half (48%) of parents said that "most days their stress is completely overwhelming," according to a 2023 survey from the American Psychological Association.

Four Ways for Parents to Manage Their Emotions
|
When toddlers melt down and teens snap back, it’s natural for us to have emotions. Some parents feel overwhelmed or out of control. Others try to push their emotions away. Emotions, after all, can be quite painful. Whether it’s joy, fear, rage, or anxiety, emotions affect parents every day. How we manage our emotions influences our children’s ability to do the same. Parents who honor their emotions model self-awareness and self-regulation for their kids.

How to Keep Your Child Calm When You're Stressed Out
While parenting has always been challenging, raising kids in today’s world is uniquely stressful. In addition to balancing work and family life, parents are anxious about the state of the world, their finances, and their children’s safety and mental health. With so much to worry about, parental stress has reached a fever pitch. A 2023 survey found that nearly 50% of parents felt completely overwhelmed, almost daily. As psychotherapists who focus on emotions, we know that stress spreads.
As a psychologist, I know how ashamed parents can feel for 'raging out.' Here's how to cope with anger. Original
It's 5 p.m. and you're trying to make dinner. Before you turn on the oven, your phone starts pinging, and your 8-year-old pleads for screen time. Meanwhile, your 4-year-old pulls the cat's tail and starts screaming. "Mom!" your oldest child yells, as if they have a megaphone. Suddenly, your blood starts to boil, and your heart starts pounding. "Be quiet! Can't you see that I'm busy?" you shout. If parenting pushes you over the edge, you're not alone.

How Owen Helps Kids Handle Tough Feelings
Whether it's peer relationships, puberty, or family strife, today's children often experience high levels of stress, anxiety, and worry. As a psychologist who works with parents, many moms, dads, and caregivers regularly ask me, "How can I help my kids feel better?" While we can't control what happens in the world, parents can equip their kids with education in emotions, a much-needed life skill. Being able to temper sharp emotions can prevent symptoms of depression, research shows.

People with high emotional intelligence do 5 things when they get angry, says psychologist—they never 'act out'
If there's one emotion that's tough to deal with, it's anger. Growing up, many of us learn that expressing it means we're "problematic" or "mean." But anger is not a character flaw. It's an important messenger that shows up when you're violated, hurt, or wronged. As a psychologist and emotions-focused therapist with over 20 years of experience, I've seen how people's relationship with anger influences how they approach it. Those who avoid the emotion tend to feel stuck and powerless.

What Are the “Crucial Years” and Why Do They Matter?
As a psychologist who works with parents, I’ve witnessed how peer and societal stressors can make middle childhood challenging. Today, kids start puberty sooner, putting a premature end to their childhoods. By elementary school, difficulties with friends percolate, sometimes starting on the playground or social media. TikTok trends propel 9-year-old girls to purchase anti-aging creams, expanding the meaning of “body-image dissatisfaction.” With so much stress, parents often feel scared. And stuck.
