Editorial: New ideas and international perspectives on school bullying: a multidisciplinary approach

In 2022, two of the editors of this Research Topic (Donoghue and Espelage) joined a team of bullying researchers from around the world to establish a new international definition of “school bullying” for UNESCO and the World Anti-Bullying Forum (WABF). The new definition reads as follows: School bullying is a damaging social process that is characterized by an imbalance of power driven by social (societal) and institutional norms.

Introduction According to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Article 16, children with disabilities have the right to freedom from exploitation, violence, and abuse. As a result, effective bullying prevention and intervention efforts are imperative to ensuring the protection of these rights. However, research indicates SWD are disproportionately victimized compared to non-disabled peers (; ).
