Dudley Muchiri’s Biography

I am a journalist with a background in Criminology and Security Studies. My love for journalism is fuelled by my passion for writing, and I therefore enjoy working on feature stories the most; especially ones touching on pertinent social issues.

Apart from writing I also enjoy reading (as any good writer MUST!), travelling, cooking and hiking.

What was your first job as a journalist?

Hmm? Training as a journalist perhaps? Technically I was in employment with Nation Africa while I was training at the Agha Khan University Graduate School of Media and Communication.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Nope, wouldn't know where to start.

How is social media changing news?

Social media has made information accessible to people instantly. Therefore in a world where just reporting the news can seem redundant, where misinformation and lies are rampantly propagated as news, mainstream media has been called upon to be more truthful, put in more work in verifying news and maintaining the integrity of news. One word rounds it up, convergence.

Media Council of Kenya Annual Journalism Excellence Awards

2023 - Gender reporting

I was the 1st tunner's up during the Media Council of Kenya Annual Journalism Excellence Awards in 2023, Print Gender Category, for a story I did on digital sexism. The story highlighted ways in which social media platforms were being used to perpetrate and breed violence against women, and advance misogynistic agendas online, mostly targeting young people.
