Copyright ©2026 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8
Copyright ©2026 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Is your grown child pulling away? These are the early signs of estrangement
When I interview parents who are estranged from their adult children, many say: “My child cut me off out of the blue. I didn't see it coming.” Yet people who have gone “no contact” with their parents often tell me that this decision was their last resort—and a long time coming. Why the disconnect Estrangement typically occurs on a continuum—and parents don't always recognize the signs, says Kristina Scharp, a communication professor at Rutgers University who studies the issue.
Why Are So Many Adults Cutting Off Their Parents?
By Elizabeth Bernstein Sept. 28, 2026 Family estrangement is on the rise, driven by shifting family norms and changing therapy practices. ‘We’re at a cultural tipping point.’ iStock-2295964606 When Robin Brill walked into a conference for estranged parents this summer in Chicago, she was stunned by the crowd. More than 200 moms and dads filled the chairs, some of whom had traveled from as far away as Australia. Another 250 watched a livestream.

Why Are So Many Adults Cutting Off Their Parents?
Many experts believe that estrangements between adult children and their parents are becoming an epidemic in the U.S., just like divorce in the 1970s. Much like then, the movement is driven by a convergence of large societal trends—this time the rise of social-media algorithms, changing therapeutic approaches and a broadening definition of trauma. “We’re at a cultural tipping point,” says William Doherty, a therapist and professor emeritus of family social science at the University of Minnesota.
Is your therapist biased? Personal agendas are creeping into the therapy room
Is your therapist biased? Mental-health professionals are supposed to keep their personal experiences, values and opinions out of the therapy room. Yet in a culture now sharply divided along political and personal identity lines, more appear to be falling short, experts say. Some push their own ideologies, encourage patients toward a path that worked for them, and even judge family members they have never met. And the results can be dangerous.

Meditation Never Worked for Me, So I Had Harvard Researchers Scan My Brain
Μake us preferred on Google I recently prepared myself for the hardest reporting assignment of my career: sitting still for 15 minutes. I was about to have my brain scanned while I meditated. Researchers at Harvard Medical School and the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences in India, among others, have mapped the brains of people while they meditate and discovered exactly when they calm down: in two to three minutes. Peak Zen, they found, occurs at about seven minutes.

Advice to live by in the new year
I recently started to record my “wins” in a small notebook each day—if I hit a deadline, have a nice chat with a friend, make someone laugh, help my mom. It’s a habit I picked up from a reader, who wrote to explain how keeping track of daily accomplishments, no matter how small, may be even more empowering than practicing gratitude. The point is that it reminds us of our own agency, and even on our hardest days we usually manage to rack up some scores.
