Letter: Big pharma and big oil ‘need’ high profits?
To the Editor: While Americans deal with the pain of inflation and high prices at the grocery store and gas pump, we can take solace that two sectors are doing extremely well. Pharmaceutical (drug) companies and oil companies are doing quite well. They both earned profits twice that of the average U.S. industry. Fact check as you’re watching advertising explaining why they need to have two times average profits. Ed Olson Mitchell
Letter: A double standard for Noem
To the Editor: Watching the news tonight, I saw our governor sign a bill that would prevent outside funds coming into South Dakota to impact our elections. That’s a great idea! But, I am confused by her double standard! Didn’t our governor accept outside Republican donor money to send some South Dakota National Guardsmen to the southern border to control the illegal immigration from Central America?
Letter: Supreme Court nomination should be best candidate
The Democrats' obsession with identity politics is manifestly bad policy. Opinion by Kevin Carroll / Mitchell January 28, 2022 05:15 PM To the Editor: President Biden has telegraphed that he is going to nominate a black woman to the Supreme Court, simply for the sake of nominating a black woman to the Supreme Court. The Democrats' obsession with identity politics is manifestly bad policy. The president should nominate the best candidate irrespective of race or gender.
Letter: South Dakota had a pro-abortion governor?
To the Editor: I read and read again, the article about former Gov. Harvey Wollman in the Jan. 8-9 edition of the Mitchell Republic. I was very surprised to know we had a pro-abortion South Dakota governor in the 1970s. Certainly his predecessor, Gov. Dick Kneip, who had a sizable family, was in favor of life for young and old. I was hoping that “abortion rights supportorter” was a misprint but in context of it being our of synch with rural voters it seems to be correct.
Letter: Jarding's heart was as big as South Dakota
He was a man that respected others and tried to make his corner of the world a better place in so many ways. Opinion by Frank Kloucek / Scotland January 28, 2022 04:24 PM To the Editor: Art Jarding was a class act whose heart was as big as all of South Dakota. His love for his family, his faith, his farm and his cattle were always at the top of his priority list. His demeanor of always respecting others and treating others as you wish to be treated was awesome.

Letter: Travel expenses should be transparent
Letters I also wouldn't mind an accounting of the taxpayer dollars used to host the campaign event on behalf of the ex-president at Mount Rushmore in July. Written By: Ed Olson / Mitchell | Feb 27th 2021 - 8am. × (Metro Creative) To the Editor: A transparent person has no secrets and tells no lies. Rep.
Letter: SD needs a better leader | The Mitchell Republic
Letters Written By: Ed Olson / Mitchell | Nov 21st 2020 - 7am. × (metro creative) To the Editor: After watching the governor’s COVID press conference on Nov. 18, I was reminded of the words of a former British Prime Minister who said: “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics.” Her COVID-19 response was really lacking. She should talk to our front line health care providers and not spout off statistics. We are not doing well in South Dakota. We need a leader, not a misleader.
Letter To The Editor: Federal Term Limits Needed
I have never been a fan of term limits at either the state or federal level. Given the roller coaster that the country has been on for the last four years, we are as a nation in need of something that could lessen the insidious, “Me versus Them” mentality.
Reader's View: Distracted driving laws hard to enforce
By Ed Olson, Bayfield Today at 6:06 p.m. We have the technology to produce cell phones that would be inoperable in a moving vehicle, at least in the driver's seat. We also could make autos that would make cell phones inoperable while the vehicle is in motion. Of course these units would never be sold. Laws making it illegal to operate a vehicle while distracted is almost impossible to enforce — unless, of course, it is after an accident caused by a distracted driver.
Reader's View: Diets aren’t healthy, only people
I was pleased to see "healthful" instead of "healthy" when referring to food, diets, etc., in the March 7 story, "Nutrition: How to eat healthfully in times of stress." But then the last paragraph blew it when it discussed "healthy foods" and a "healthy diet." People can be healthy...
More severe weather in store for middle states in US
Today's imagery from NASA's AIRS instrument on the Aqua satellite indicates more severe weather is in store for the Midwest from Texas to Michigan. There is another extremely strong storm that is stretching from south to north and into Canada, and that system can be seen in this AIRS image from May 11, 2015.
Noul's impending landfall raises warning #2 in Luzon
The Philippines warning center has raised a #2 warning for its citizens in the Luzon province of Catanduanes. This warning indicates, among other things, that the tropical cyclone will affect the locality and that winds of greater than 100 kph up to 185 kph (62 to 114 mph) may be expected in at least 18 hours. Philippines know the storm as Dodong and have also raised warning #1 for the areas of Luzon provinces of Sorsogon.
Tropical disturbance in the North Atlantic likely to develop
Although the non-tropical low pressure system in the North Atlantic has moved little during the past several hours it has become better defined with increasing organization of the associated thunderstorm activity. The low is located 230 miles south-southeast of North/South Carolina border. Conditions are gradually becoming more conducive to its development to a subtropical cyclone within the next 24 to 48 hours.
