We rely on a moral discourse that we inherited from much earlier times but both we and our society has a much different structure than the societies in which that discourse developed.

His book, After Virtue: A Study In Moral Theory (1981) “… is one of the most important works of Anglophone moral and political philosophy in the 20th century.” Link.
