Canada’s Africa strategy is a landmark moment for Canada-Africa relations, but still needs work Original
For the first time in its history, Canada has unveiled a comprehensive Africa strategy, marking a significant milestone in the Canadian approach to engaging with the African continent. Launched on March 6 by Liberal MP Rob Oliphant, the parliamentary secretary to the foreign affairs minister, the strategy represents a crucial step towards a more coherent and intentional relationship with Africa. This development is worthy of praise for several reasons.
Ghana’s Elections 2020, Bad Samaritans, And Narratives Of Insecurity
Bad Samaritans are the antithesis of the inspirational Biblical story of the Good Samaritan who attended to the wounded while others passed by. I use Bad Samaritans, therefore, as a metaphor to represent bad politics and irresponsible politicians and their narratives on security in Ghana. I argue that Ghanaians must reject Bad Samaritans not only on moral grounds but more importantly because of the threat they pose, through their narratives, to national security and public safety.
The Military And Defence Of Ghana: The Root Of Persistent Controversies And The Way Out
It is troubling that issues on national security and defence usually attract heated politicization among leading political figures and political parties in Ghana. Particularly, the deployment of the Ghana Armed Forces within the territorial borders of Ghana generates controversies and reignite memories of brutalities that were unleashed on Ghanaians during the period of military rule.
United States-Ghana Agreement: An Opportunity For Paradigm Shift In Ghana’s Approach To National Security And Defence
The leaked agreement between the government of the United States of America and the government of the Republic of Ghana on defence cooperation, the status of United States forces, and access to and use of agreed facilities and areas in the republic of Ghana, hereafter referred to as United States-Ghana enhanced security cooperation agreement, has generated heated debates in Ghana's mainstream media and social over the past 48 hours.
Right And Wrong Signals: A Message To His Excellency, President Akufo-Addo
Mr. President, I hope that this message finds you well. At the onset, let me wish you a Merry Christmas in advance and congratulate you on your courage, deftness, and consistent delivery of the Ghana beyond aid slogan which is gradually defining your presidency.
The Major Mahama Trust Fund Bill Is A Good Idea Gone Bad: Replace It With A General Law On Security Personnel Survivors’ Benefits
We sometimes take for granted the services of our security personnel who work around the clock to keep us safe. It is therefore important to occasionally take time to express our gratitude for their work. Unfortunately, some of our security personnel get seriously injured or even lose their lives while trying to protect us.
Porous Borders, External Players, And The Security Of Ghana’s Election 2016
Two weeks ago the United States and the United Kingdom issued separate statements that threatened to revoke the visas of Ghanaian politicians who would incite violence prior and in the aftermath of the December 7, 2016 general elections.
Allowing African Mistakes? Reflection On President Mahama’s Address To The UN General Assembly
It is common knowledge that President Mahama has referred to Ghanaians as a people who have short memories. Perhaps, the president is right about a certain category of Ghanaians but not academics. The nature and scope of the academic profession does not predispose them to the short memory symptom. Academics have an active memory because of their penchant for teaching and research.
6 Reasons Why Donald Trump Won The US Presidency
Prof Edward Akuffo In a conversation with some friends on November 7, 2016, I argued that Donald Trump will win the presidency of the United States of America and that should not be surprising at all. To the majority of people, Hilary’s win was largely written on the wall. Yet, the outcome of the elections is ONE BIG DECEPTION for these people. Keen observers, however, are not surprised.
Securing Ghana During Elections 2016 And Beyond
The mentioning of the word ‘insecurity’ raises concern for many Ghanaians who witnessed or experienced the dictatorship of military regimes, especially, under the J. J. Rawlings-led Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC). The violence and human rights abuses under military governments, to a large extent, are firmly ingrained in the collective psyche of the older generation of Ghanaians.
The Montie Trio, Law, Media And National Security
The Supreme Court’s conviction and imposition of a four-month custodial sentence and a fine of GHC 10000 each on the Montie trio, and another GHC 30000 fine on the directors of Montie FM has generated heated debate in Ghana over past few days.
The Montie Trio Sentence Remission, the Presidents Trio, and the Politics of Legalism
The ensuing debate on President Mahama’s remission of the custodial sentence of the Montie trio—Messrs Salifu Maase, Alistair Nelson, and Godwin Ako Gunn—has reconfirmed the long standing view that politics has no clearly defined boundaries. In that vein, keen observers and pundits would agree that even the legal aspect of the debate has veered off the boundary of legalism into open political questions.
