Cul-de-Sac #1 surprised me throughout. I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, as I was drawn to this based on Mike Carey’s involvement and the incredible art by Jonathan Wayshak. Nothing else looks like this, and I am here for it! The opening moments showcase a sort of drug deal that goes bad, but it unfurls so beautifully in its depiction that it drew me in immediately.

“They are coming. And they’re bringing war with them.” Declares the opening splash image of Planet Death #0 by writers Derek Kolstad and Robert Venditti, artist Tomás Giorello, colorist Dave Stewart, and letterer Tom Napolitano. And while it is a salvo for the issue, I can’t help but think of it as a salvo from Bad Idea as a whole.

Published by Image Comics, Precious Metal is a surrealist sci-fi epic by Darcy Van Poelgeest (writer/co-creator), Ian Bertram (artist/co-creator), Matt Hollingsworth (colorist), Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (letterer), and Ben Didier (design). It’s over 300 pages of captivating strangeness that baffled and impressed me repeatedly. In short, Precious Metal is about a tracker tasked with retrieving a modded boy who is being used as a weapon of mass destruction.
