Last Tuesday, the first day of Paris Men’s Fashion Week, I took pictures of two different outfits on two different runways, both in a colour combination that caught my eye. The first was at Auralee: a cherry-red car coat paired with bright purple trousers. The second, a few hours later, at Louis Vuitton: a washed-out violet hoodie tucked under a red M-65 jacket with an even redder wide-wale coat.

“오늘날 우리의 삶에 정부가 미치는 영향을 생각하면, 공산주의라는 배경은 충분히 의미 있는 선택이었다.” 파리의 미래적인 공간 ‘에스파스 니에메예르’에서 2027 봄 컬렉션을 공개한 윌리 차바리아의 말이다. 지난해 6월, 윌리 차바리아는 파리 패션위크 런웨이를 미국 이민세관단속국에 구금된 이민자와 시민들에게 헌정하며 시작했다. 미국 디자이너인 그는 당시 “지워지고 있는 시대 속에서 자신의 정체성을 되찾는 것”이 이번 컬렉션의 의미라고 설명했다. 그리고 지난 금요일, 차바리아는 파리에서 네 번째 컬렉션을 선보였다. 장소는 미래적인 분위기의 지하 공간인 에스파스 니에메예르. 프랑스 공산당 본부로 사용되는 이 건물은 잔디 위로 솟아오른 거대한 콘크리트 반구 형태의 구조물로도 잘 알려져 있다. “이 건물을 정말 좋아합니다. 40년 가까이 동경해왔어요. 그뿐 아니라 오늘날 우리의 일상에 정부가 얼마나 큰 영향을 미치는지를 생각하면 공산주의라는 배경 역시 적절하다고 느꼈습니다.
