VIENNA/CHICAGO—With less than two months to go until the US midterm elections, President Donald Trump is more unpopular than ever, with his approval rating having dropped to a record low of 33%. Among the reasons for Americans’ dissatisfaction are his attacks on democratic institutions and principles, the economy (which only 4% of poll respondents see as “very strong”), his and his family’s personal enrichment, and the war in Iran (which 68% oppose).
Chile's new voting rules may have derailed the new Constitution
Earlier this month, just 38 percent of Chileans voted in favor of the country's new constitution. That's a significant drop in support from 2020, when 78 percent of voters in an October referendum voted in favor of drafting a new constitution. Why did support for replacing Chile's Pinochet-era constitution fall by half between 2020 and 2022? Public opinion soured on the new constitution amid disinformation campaigns and claims that the charter was too leftist.

As they began, immediately after the Jan. 22 women’s marches, Trump tweeted: The tweet implied that people who protest do not vote. Research suggests that the opposite is true: People who protest are no less likely to vote than non-protesters. If anything, protesters vote at higher rates.
