Xbox is not doing well, and following the announcement that the company will cut 3,200 jobs in the coming months, many are wondering what went wrong. In her memo detailing the scope of the layoffs, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma revealed at least one factor: Game Pass “did not grow at the pace we expected,” she wrote. According to a Wall Street Journal report, Game Pass currently has only 30 million subscribers.

While Sony hasn’t directly confirmed the news, Steam metadata shows the long list of nations where the game can’t be purchased, including most of Africa and Southwest Asia. The decision almost certainly overlaps with Sony’s controversial PlayStation Network linking policy on PC. In 2024, Sony briefly attempted to require Helldivers 2 players to link their Steam profiles to a PSN account, a policy that was apparently supposed to be in place at launch but was disabled due to technical issues.

Last week, Sony dropped a bomb: the company will stop producing physical discs for PlayStation games starting in January 2028. To put it mildly, the news was not well received. X users dogpiled the company for a move that will further diminish consumer rights, while game industry veterans mourned the end of an era. PlayStation's X account has been completely inactive since delivering the news last Wednesday.
