I'm a visual journalist -- that means most often, I am integrating drawings or animation into my stories. Whether it's in the form of a comic, an animation, a graphic recording (meaning a drawing of a conversation), or otherwise, I play in the space between reading and seeing.

That coexistence of commerce and art, permanence and evanescent beauty still defines the city. Florence, in a natural declivity it’s possible to take in–if you’re on the right nearby hilltop–in one glance, accommodates scholars and artisans, students and pensioners, visitors and locals. Rome is an exuberant, chaotic beauty, a city built on millennia of layers of garbage; Milan is handsome and sprawling and tame, a little square. Florence is just right.

BY Elizabeth Beier Jul 15, 2019 From May 16-19 2019, New York City's School of Visual Arts hosted the Queers & Comics Conference, a biennial LGBTQ cartoonist conference. The event was organized by Jennifer Camper and Justin Hall and provided a space for artists, writers and fans to discuss everything from publishing to story structure to social justice to different kinds of pens. Bay Area artist Elizabeth Beier attended the event and created visual notes of some of the panels.

Pro: citizen journalists can post to worldwide audience. Con: social media platforms incentivized to worsen polarization and rage. Worth it?
