STEM Readings in the English Classroom
Although I hope that all of my students will be lifelong readers of novels and poetry and will turn to literature as a source of pleasure, growth, and wisdom, many of the texts that young people will need to read and write—as an element of their education and work, as well as life in the 21st century—will be rooted in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
A Houston summer yawned before us. I hatched a plan. (Essay)
“No more TV until bedtime,” I told my husband. “We’re going to hang out in the yard every night after dinner.” (Dinners at which both my 18-month-old son and four-year-old daughter would eat full portions of zucchini without complaint.) “‘We’ as in ‘you and the kids?’” he asked. And that is how my husband discovered a passion for staying in the air conditioning and doing the dishes. I thought about the things that would make our time outside bearable — fun, even.

How to have that first period chat with your daughter and the tell-tale signs it may start soon
You may notice a light discharge on your daughter’s underwear (clear or white). This usually occurs around ovulation and your tweens body may start cycling for 3 to 12 months before their first actual ‘blood discharge’ period. This is all normal. Casually point it out to them. And mood changes, headaches and tummy cramps (PMS) may accompany this cycling, so encourage your daughter to take note of the pattern.
When Car Seat Battles And Bodily Autonomy Collide
Scary Mommy and Artem Varnitsin/EyeEm/Getty Recently, my 20-month-old toddler decided that she didn’t want to be buckled into her car seat. After a year and a half of loving car rides, one day she just was done with it. I would plop her into the bucket of the seat, but before I could snap together the starfish of buckles over her chest, she would squirm away and stand up, giving me a sly look and a giggle.
Opinion: Trust teachers and skip the STAAR Original
In this time of crisis, we have come to understand the value of testing. COVID-19 tests offer us reliable data that can be accessed and applied quickly. They offer a barometer, something to help assess behaviors and adjust accordingly. A good test is reliable, actionable and offers meaningful insight — if positive, stay home; if negative, proceed with caution.
Essay: Learning in the time of coronavirus and the lessons I didn’t get to teach
I have plans for my students. I believe my lessons can change their lives. Every March I read Richard Preston’s “The Hot Zone” with my ninth grade English students at Bellaire High School. The nonfiction book follows a team of scientists and soldiers who fight to contain an outbreak of an airborne strain of Ebola — a disease that, at one point, killed up to 90 percent of the people it infected.
Spotlight: Don't give up on NATO
NATO is an acronym that stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It was founded in 1949 by the United States and 11 other Western nations as a result of communist expansion following World War II. At the end of the war, the USSR began the installation of pro-Soviet governments in many of the countries it had taken away from Germany. As a result, the United States and its western allies worked to prevent further expansion of communism in Europe. Today, there are 29 member nations of NATO.
Spotlight: Reading to your children the best investment you'll ever make
Start reading to your children when they are young. Studies show that it not only creates a bond with the reader, but the child learns how to focus, which is extremely important when he/she enters school. As a child grows, interest in books also grows. A parent should make books available. I write because I am a teacher. It seems we have a generation of students who don’t like to read or refuse to read unless they absolutely have to.

The Twins recap Married at First Sight: Dean and Charlene have the ultimate face-off.
We open with a comprehensive recap of last night’s commitment ceremony and NO. We were there because we are always there, and tbh, hardly anything happened. We simply do not have the time to re-watch scenes we saw less than 24 hours ago when we know you have scenes of Troy talking to a pole that you are not showing us. Speaking of Troy, Ashley’s still mad at him because he won’t stop being so… Troy.
If you're over 40, there's an online test you can do to predict your melanoma risk.
If you’re over 40 there’s a test you can take which predicts your risk of melanoma. Developed by Queensland researchers at QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, the online Melanoma Risk Predictor uses melanoma risk factors to determine the user’s chance of developing melanoma in the next three and a half years. These factors include age, sex, ability to tan, number of moles at age 21, number of skin lesions treated, hair colour and sunscreen use.
Fiona O'Loughlin just won I'm A Celebrity... and these are the reasons she deserved to.
Fiona O’Loughlin is easily the best thing to come out of this season’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! She sweet, kind, open, honest… and she just took the top prize on tonight’s finale of the jungle based reality show. With a record amount of public votes, Fiona, 54, beat out Shannon Noll for the crown, and she completely deserved it. Here’s why. Fiona has never tried to hide her problems, and has spoken honestly – both on and off the show – about her struggles with alcoholism.
It's not okay to approach my child in the schoolyard: Why we pulled our son from his school.
Today my husband and I pulled our son out of his primary school. It’s one of those fancy private schools, with a conspicuous air of exclusivity and wealth. You know the type – big fees, big gates, and parents with big cars (and even bigger pockets). We had eagerly and dutifully placed him on the wait list at birth, and had already coughed up a small fortune to get him through to Year Two. It was a school that “actively embraced community” and involved parents in all facets of learning.
Married At First Sight's Tracey wants everyone to know she's not pregnant.
In case you were wondering Married At First Sight‘s Tracey Jewel is not pregnant. Despite saying she would like to have a baby just weeks ago, the 35-year-old reality star says she is not expecting at the moment, and she doesn’t have any plans to fall pregnant in the near future. Phew. Glad we cleared that up.
Paige was enjoying a night out with Bernard Tomic when someone drugged her drink.
He’s no stranger to scandal, but this is one discussion Bernard Tomic would probably prefer he wasn’t a part of. Three young women – Paige, Savannah and Lauren – have appeared on Channel Nine’s A Current Affair program claiming they had their drinks spiked after being invited into Tomic’s private room at The Bedroom nightclub in Brisbane. Paige McCarthy was the first to come forward with her story, prompting two more women to speak about their similar experiences.

The Best Single Disney Women
I’m a sucker for a good Disney love story as much as the next person, but I think it’s important to highlight some of the greatest single ladies of Disney on this special day. Tink often gets a lot of backlash as being the super sassy fairy. But did anyone ever stop to think that it’s a little hard to deal with seven preteen boys, while wearing a mini dress and shoes with giant pom poms on them?
