Elizabeth Leake is a project manager of advanced cyberinfrastructure IV at Texas A&M University. In 2012, she founded STEM-Trek, a global, grassroots nonprofit organization that supports travel, mentoring and professional development opportunities for science, technology, engineering and mathematics scholars from underrepresented groups and regions. This was my eighth year to judge the International Supercomputing Conference Student Cluster Competition (ISC High Performance SCC); third to cover both remote and on-site contests. I haven’t attended in-person since ISC 2018; in 2020, I had a plane ticket, but everything shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic before I could travel. It has been a long road to recovery for travel and conferencing industries (not to mention we extroverts).

Prior to the June International Supercomputing Conference, ISC High Performance 2026, in Hamburg, Germany, Sean Feeney (Texas A&M University PhD Student/Computer Science/Quantum) and I visited the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) and their JUNIQ (pronounced unique) testlab (Jülich UNified Infrastructure for Quantum Computing). The ISC’26 theme was, “Connecting the Dots,” which is what Feeney and I were also doing in Jülich.

The International Supercomputing Conference, ISC High Performance 2026, drew a record 4,035 attendees and 188 exhibitors from 64 and 26 countries, respectively. I have always found ISC to be thoughtfully planned with ample opportunities to network and reconnect with beloved colleagues.
