Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I have one, and I love using it for writing fiction.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email is usually best because that gives me time to think about the pitch and do a little research before responding.

Why did you become a journalist?

I love to talk to people and I love to tell their stories.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I did not. My first newspaper experience was at college, writing for the school's alternative paper.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Ask a lot of questions and engage with people you don't know. They often have interesting stories to tell.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

You'll find me at the beach looking for sea glass and other treasures.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The New Yorker
