Mules: Disturbing the footwear market
WGSN Instock looks at how the mule is disrupting the footwear market. In a globalised world of peripatetic workforces and nomadic lifestyles, consumers are not only crossing channels but crossing seasons when it comes to travelling. The demand for trans-seasonality and versatility is a key driver across all categories and, at WGSN Instock, we’ve seen this trend to be particularly prominent in the footwear market.
The transparent trend: SS18 and beyond
Transparent accessories are key for SS18, but they’re set to evolve as we look to future seasons. From the Balenciaga, Balmain and Yeezy catwalks through to Zara and Public Desire, the trend has infiltrated different markets, and has been picked up by key influencers such as Kim Kardashian-West and Aimee Song (@songofstyle). It’s been pioneered for the last few seasons in the form of ‘barley-there’ sandals and cross body bags.
TAIABOTANICS: A literal take on natural beauty
Meet London-based Muji Othol, the founder of TAIABOTANICS, a new, sustainable skincare collection harnessing unique botanicals indigenous to Africa. Although the idea for TAIABOTANICS took years to form and fully take shape, it first came to Muji during a trip to her native South Sudan in 2013, months before civil war and a subsequent refugee crisis. TAIABOTANICS is a literal take on natural beauty – focusing on sustainability, ethics and female empowerment.
Clergerie CEO Perry Oosting on brand direction, femininity and shopping through Instagram
Clergerie’s recent appointment of Perry Oosting as CEO signals a shakeup for the brand, with Oosting bringing in an entire new team, including a new creative director. From investing in digital to new, key store locations, Clergerie is undergoing a rebrand. Last week in London, WGSN’s Senior Footwear & Accessories Editor Ella Hudson caught up with Oosting to hear more on the future of the footwear brand. I understand that there’s been a lot of change at Clergerie.
Festival d'Hyères : The ones to watch
Every year, the sleepy French town of Hyères is descended upon by the fashion pack, flocking to see the newest names emerging in fashion, photography and accessories at the legendary Festival d’Hyères. With a reputation for launching some of the most reputable names across the industry, 2018 marks the festival’s 33rd year – making it the oldest fashion festival in the world. Our Womenswear Teams’ Anna Ross and Polly Walters were on the ground to share their pick of the new names to know now.
I AND ME - the British denim label bypassing traditional trends & catwalk seasons
At I AND ME, the collections move at their own pace – reflecting the moment rather than the season. It’s been a while since we last wrote about East London denim and lifestyle brand I AND ME , but that’s due to the brand’s season-less design approach that stealthily surpasses the breakneck speed of the fashion calendar. We spoke to Jessica to get the latest scoop on the label and find out more behind the Las Casas collection.
The Hungarian denim designer to know this summer
For a few seasons, now, Eastern Europe has been responsible for churning out some of hottest new fashion labels. The cult of Vetements and Gosha Rubchinskiy has paved the way for a new generation of emerging designers from countries like Georgia, Poland, Ukraine and Hungary. During Budapest Fashion Week, WGSN picked up on Hungarian label Nanushka as talent to watch.
Coachella: Our top 4 denim themes
2018 festival season has officially begun and, to kick things off, the WGSN denim team headed out to Coachella to scout the coolest and newest trends amongst attendees and, as usual – everyone came dressed to impress. Long gone are the ‘flower-crown boho’ crowd as we say hello to a variety of styles and trends tapping into the ’90s, ’80s, 1960s motocross, workwear, utility, athleisure and yes, updated bohemian looks. Below we highlight our top 5 denim-clad looks from weekend one at Coachella.
New Balance Running & Outdoor VP on sustainability, customisation and 3D printing
In the wake of New Balance’s sponsorship of the London Marathon, WGSN sat down with Tom Carleo, VP of Running & Outdoor at New Balance, to talk the future of athletic footwear – from sustainability, to customisation and 3-d printing. Thinking about developments such as automation and 3-D printing technology, we’re seeing huge shifts in manufacturing techniques and processes. What’s new and next for New Balance in this space? At New Balance, we have a really unique position in manufacturing.
Love gemstones? Then Regal Rose could be your new go-to brand
Septum rings? Check. Glass coffin choker? Check. Ornate layered chain choker? Check. If alternative jewellery and accessories with a fierce edge and a dreamy dark twist is your thing, then look no further than British jewellery brand Regal Rose for all of your gothic needs. I have personally got my eye on the Apothecary Amulet Necklace – Black Agate. As a gemstone novice I loved discovering jewellery brand Regal Rose, and since the discovery it has fast become the go-to brand to start off my collection.
Explore Mansur Gavriel's Cotton Candy Pop-Up Shop
Imagine a dream shop. There would be chocolate (because obvs) and other beautiful treats to adorn your feet and arms with. That dream sequence is pretty much what the team at Mansur Gavriel (designers Rachel Gavriel and Foriana Gavriel) have brought to life with their new Soho pop-up store. Opened to the public today, the pop-up is dedicated to the brand’s new S/S17 aptly named Candy Shop (see what they did there).
Confirmation that Copenhagen is a sneakerhead's paradise
When you consider the relatively small scale of the Danish capital in comparison, say, to London, New York or any of the other ‘so-called fashion capitals’ of the world, it’s all the more remarkable that Copenhagen has had such a far-reaching and long-lasting impact on popular culture. The influence of the Danes is evident across what are arguably some of best parts of day-to-day life.
Vetements Makes Its Menswear Debut on MR PORTER
Primarily classified as womenswear, Vetements’ slouchy silhouettes have a unisex appeal, and have been spotted on many men as well. So it’s worth noting that the label’s first proper “menswear” offerings are beginning to hit the market, with one standout piece making its debut on e-commerce retailer MR PORTER this morning. The $1,865 hoodie features heavy metal-inspired graphics on the front, sleeves, and a vulgar phrase on the back graphic encased within a pentagram.
Pre-Summer 17 Catwalk Alert: Socks & Sandals
Each season, in addition to our in-depth catwalk reviews at WGSN, we spotlight the early trends that are coming through. Right now we’re in the middle of Pre-Summer 2017 and key themes are already emerging from the shows. Spotted at Carven, Versace, Rochas and Missoni; it was all about socks teamed with sandals. A flurry of socks and sandals styling within Pre-Summer 17 collections nods to the increasingly important transseasonal mood.
Creative photographers exploring London
As Senior Editor of Accessories & Footwear at WGSN I see a lot of footwear campaigns, but none have really caught my eye lately, so when I saw this new creative series, it made me sit up and watch. The thing about footwear is that if it’s really good it seamlessly fits into your life and you don’t even realise its impact, other than it helps you move better, easier, with a spring in your step and an essence of swag. And that’s what this campaign shows beautifully.
Your WGSN editor's Instagram guide
Let’s face it, Instagram is now a fashion’s editors tool, you need it along with your catwalk invite and your notebook. For the consumer, an editor’s Instagram feed provides a chance to see the collections early and get early insight into the key trends for next season. While there has been a lot of chatter about men’s shows, this season is still as busy as ever, and as such we have our WGSN editors out on the ground covering the global men’s fashion weeks.
Christoper Raeburn teams with Clarks on a S/S17 footwear line
This might have been the best season yet for menswear, as shown by the stellar catwalk shows that brightened up rainy London this weekend and into the early part of the week. But while most of the attention was on the full garment looks, the footwear making its way down the runway was worth paying attention to as well. As part of his catwalk show on Sunday (June 12th) Christopher Raeburn debuted the latest offering of his collaboration with high street footwear retailer Clarks.
