Data centers have a bigger NIMBY problem than nuclear reactors, a new poll shows

You know AI data centers have an image problem when more people say they'd rather live near a nuclear reactor. A new Gallup poll found that 71% of Americans say they don't want a data center being built where they live, far more than the 53% who would oppose construction of a nearby nuclear power plant. Of those opposed to data center construction, 48% said they were strongly in opposition. The survey, conducted in March, found that data centers are broadly unpopular across the political spectrum.

Big Tech's AI budget keeps getting bigger. Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and Google are now planning to spend up to $725 billion on capital expenditures in 2026, investors learned on Wednesday's first-quarter earnings calls. The latest total is roughly $100 billion more than the projections they made in the previous earnings for 2026. The biggest surprise came from Microsoft, which announced plans to spend $190 billion on capex this year.

Maine could be the first state to successfully call a timeout on the AI race. Lawmakers in at least 12 states have tried this year to slow Big Tech's AI infrastructure buildout with legislation that would impose temporary bans on approvals and construction of new data centers. The proposed moratoriums are a response to rising local resistance to data centers, as communities across the country raise questions about the impact of these facilities on local resources and infrastructure.
