They knew the name before it was even built. McKale Memorial Center. That’s what the University of Arizona and its alumni organization planned to name its new state-of-the-art athletics facility in 1967 — six years before it would open its doors to the Tucson community. The Arizona Alumni Association proposed the name to university leaders, including then-Arizona president Richard A. Harvill, in honor of J.F. “Pop” McKale, a former coach, professor and athletic director for the school from 1914-57.

After intense online backlash caused by Becky Burke and her wife’s pregnancy announcement on social media earlier this week, the Arizona women’s basketball coach has responded. “Yesterday, my wife and I shared the news that we are expecting a baby. Unfortunately, the announcement also brought some of the most hateful comments we’ve ever seen,” she shared on social media Wednesday.
