The young woman gazing ahead, Moll Hackabout, sits in her home located at London's Drury Lane just as the magistrate Sir John Gonson (known for being over enthusiastic in raiding brothels) and his bailiffs enter to arrest her for keeping a disorderly house. She’s sentenced to hard labour. It’s said that Hogarth named her after Daniel Defoe’s Moll Flanders and the real-life infamous prostitute, Kate Hackabout.

However, when it was first exhibited at the 1819 Paris Salon, it received a mixed reception, dividing critics. Some were fascinated by the painting’s macabre nature, while others were horrified by the depiction of numerous dead bodies.
