Washington, DC — July 24, 2026 — The Breakthrough Institute endorsed the Wildfire Emissions Prevention Act (WEPA) of 2026 led by a bipartisan group of Senators. This legislation would simplify regulatory compliance for states conducting prescribed burns. These and other proactive fuel reduction treatments aim to reduce wildfire intensity and severity. The bill would classify prescribed burns as exception events, excluding smoke from these wildfire mitigation efforts from Clean Air Act calculations.

Smoke from wildfires in Canada and Minnesota left much of the east coast under hazy skies this past weekend—an increasingly familiar summer occurrence. In some parts of the D.C. metro area, air quality reached a hazardous 373 AQI. No U.S. forest policy could have prevented smoke from Canadian wildfires from reaching D.C. But the episode is a reminder of the broader wildfire crisis and of the need to ensure federal investments in reducing wildfire risk are actually yielding results here at home.

Trump’s Reorganization Adds to Perfect Storm of Wildfire Risk

The Western United States is facing another severe fire season. More than 12 million acres have burned so far in 2026, already surpassing the total cumulative area burnt by wildfires in all of 2024. According to the National Interagency Fire Center’s incident reports, the number of acres burned is up 231% compared to the previous 10-year average for the first three months of the year, with activity largely concentrated in the Southeast and Great Plains.
