Ahead of the November election, the Democratic Volunteer Center has officially opened in Mountain View with the aim of getting more Democratic candidates elected to office. Located in a former REI store, the volunteer center drew a crowd of local leaders to Charleston Plaza Saturday morning, Aug. 15, that included former U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo.

Sitting on a bleacher on a weekday morning, Gary John, a 77-year-old hammer thrower, pulled on a pair of fluorescent yellow training shoes and strapped a glove onto his right hand. Then he dragged a heavy metal ball by a wire to a dusty concrete ring at Moffett Field. “It’s what keeps me going,” John said, before spinning in a circle, bringing his arms above his head and releasing an 8-kilo hammer in the air.
